what would be a good starter Sig for me?  I am going this week to see what fits my hand well(short fingers)...  I'm looking for 9mm  preferably SA/DA  full size or compact... would like to keep it under $1000.
I know it's a matter of preference... and everyone is different... just looking for some input so I have a starting point when it comes to looking at them! thanks!

Short answer, whichever one feels good to you is gonna be great. In DA/SA, I'm guessing you'll like the 229 E2.

If you're not opposed to striker fire, the P320 is fantastic and no matter which size you get (full size or compact) you can get a "small" circumference grip if the one it comes with is just a bit too big for you (it comes with a medium, which to me feels like a standard 229)

Take a look at the M11-A1 or P229.

I like the Sig P226 TacOps TB.  A lot of gun for the money, comes with four 20rd mags.

Take a look at all of the P226 variants and choose the one you like best.

You can't go wrong.

I like the Tac Ops or MK 25 myself.

If it's nightstand or range only, go P226. Otherwise go P229.

Either will have lots of variations. I'd say E2 grips with a short reach trigger should fit small hands well. I do recommend the SRT (not to be confused with the short reach trigger) for any SIG classic. IMO, don't fall for marketing gimmicks when you choose. Decide what features you want and find the model that matches it. In other words, don't buy a Mk25 just for stickers or an M11-A1 just because the grips say P228 and the slide says M11-A1.

P239 has smaller grips. 225A1 is the next larger grip. Both are single stack. M11 has a smaller grip than the 229 and both are double stack. Try them all and see what fits.

I have a 226 and an M11-A1. The 226 is the nightstand gun with a light on it and the M11 is my EDC. Can't go wrong with either.

The only thing I changed was to swap out the grips on the M11 to the E2 style like on the 226. These seem to fit my hand better.

I would suggest first checking out a P22x with the E2 grip.  P226/8/9 are all great pistols and they can be had quite often for good prices if you keep an eye out.  Watch for police trade ins or just your used sections at your local shops.  I got my P226 Elite and P228 both used for great prices.

I agree with this. I like nice guns (Knight Sr-15, LWRCI M6 SPR, Beretta M9A3, HK P30L…. not wealthy, just prefer quality over quantity). The P226 tacops, while pricey, IS a lot of gun for the money. Check Slickguns; the current best price is $1149.

Tip from current owner; I found the stock grips too be to slick. I installed some Hogue G10 grips and they make a HUGE difference. Black Mascus seems to "match" the gun well. "Pirañas" are the grippiest but I went with "chainlink" (just my prefererence).

I want to cerakote the slide some Kryptek pattern but I don't want to diminish it's resale value should I ever want to sell it (unlikely), plus I've already taken the time to push and zero the sights.

FYI, my M9A3 seems SLIGHTLY more accurate than the P226 but it's within the margin of error for the little side-by-side testing I did. M9A3 trigger is slightly lighter. P226 has a much better reset and it's recoil is more of a shove compared to the M9A3's snap.  Hornady 124gr XTP is accurate out of it but I haven't tried other ammos in it yet; just went with the 124r XTP because I HAVE tested a lot of ammos in my M9A3 and the 124r XTP seems to be the most accurate I've tried by a WIDE margin.  P30L is more ergonomic but it's a totally different animal.

There's also the SP2022 which comes in 9mm and .40S&W and is similar to the P226 for less money.

That's not a Sig

That's what I thought when the SP2340 was released. "That's no SIG!  It's cheap plastic, Glock wannabe without the striker!"  I was dumb. I finally got around to buying a SP2022 a few years ago and WOW!  Great pistol for the price. I actually use it more than my P229 in 3 gun now. It most certainly deserves the SIG part of SIGPRO.

If the OP had put a lower desired price, I certainly would've recommended it, but the classic line offers more options.

All and any. But seriously I would go feel them in a shop. The 320 is great polymer option. However I love the 226 for a full size and the 229 for a compact. I have a mk25d and a m11a1d. The mk25 is in the bedside safe and the m11a1 is with me all day as my ccw. Both are amazing and you can't go wrong. If you go to the mk25 get the srt its 40$ and 20min that will really be noticeable (m11a1 has it already).

Classic SIG 226 or 229.  You will find extra time in the day just to go to the range to shoot either of them. they are that good.

FYI 226 (MK 25) has been the Navy SEAL pistol of choice for 20 years

229 is used by most top police and SWAT agencies around the country.  I think 229 is also the some of the alphabet agencies go to.

go to SIGs website to see the different options on different models.

You could pick up CPO or leo trade in p226 and p229 for under $1k. Gunsmidwest.com still has some p229 CPO's for $479 (there .40 s&w though). I like my P226 tacops the most, the p228 I just out together from a parts kit is a very close second.

Find a nice used P228 on the interwebs and see how you like...(you will love it) but on the slim chance you don't you can sell it here for your money back.

Striker fired: P320
DA/SA: SP2022

Either will get you into the SIG game w/money left over for mags, holsters, ammo, etc.

went today to a local range... they showed me a 226  Tacops  with 4 20 rnd mags for $1100 ...really liked it... but then showed me the 320 in 9.... that thing has the sweetest trigger pull compared to any of the striker fire pistols I have shot. I think it was $650ish...  I love the SA/DA pistols... but can't get that sweet trigger pull out of my mind...

And that is why I have a P226 (9mm), two P229s (9mm- one SAS custom and one Legion), P220 carry SAS, and a P320 (9mm full-size and subcompact kit) - SIGs are my favorite

The most overlooked SIG and still one of my favorites is the SIG P225. It's a single stack 9 shot, very concealable. They sell them with factory night sights which will give you a 24/7 self-defense handgun.

The P226 is a large pistol but would be a first pick for me if I were going into harms way.

My P229 is too bulky and it shoots low for some reason.

Embrace the 320.  Shoots like a dream.  Lights out man and the recoil is so negligible allowing for quick follow up or double tap shots.

I'm with the other guy who said P228.

I have a 226, 229, X-Five and finally after searching the used gun shops found a 228 which was up to my standards on price.

The thing is a sweet shooter, balances and conceals  extremely well. Holds 15+1 and is slimmer than a 229. Plus you get to enter the exclusive fan club of 228 owners as the pistol is no longer made.

Any Sig is a good Sig.

Like the man said, so many Sig Sauer pistols, and so few paychecks. I'm waiting for the next run of the Lipsey's exclusive DA/SA P220 10MM two tone, setting aside cash regularly. And still looking at other Sig Sauer pistols every time I go to a gun shop or pawn shop. It's caliber driven, but I tend to lean toward the P220 and P227. The P22x series and 1911 pattern are the only pistols I own.

Go with the classic an get a p series. My vote would be a P229 type, like a M11A1.

Do the 320's swap mags with the 226's, or are they proprietary?

Unfortunately proprietary. But I'm still a big fan of the 320 also. Can get the mags ~$35 each shipped from QuanticoTactical
