Without me having to buy a buffet of ammo to try, in your opinion which PD ammo have your had great success out of a 26.  I know fully well I need to vet the final selection for reliability....

I have some in stock now, but I would like to hear your opinions, no +P.

Federal HST 124gr standard pressure. Impressive ballistics from short barrels. My new carry load. Carried Gold Dots for years...still a very good round. I like Hornady Critical Duty in service size pistols. I think I read somewhere Hornady does not recommend these in short barrels. I believe the HST is the best you can currently buy. Just my opinion.

I have Federal Hydrashock already, I believe 124 grain, I will have to look in the morning. But what does the T in HST mean?

Never mind, HST is a different bullet...I just read.  I have never seen the HST in the stores

Maybe it is too early to be typing

I just checked, I have plain Hydrashock, 124 grain.  I have Speer Gold Dots for my .40 caliber, 180 grain, along with Hornady TAP that I have in my Sig 229, my nightstand gun

I carry 124gr HST in my 26.

Federal's website describes them below. My understanding is that HST is newer and has better expansion.

The choice of law enforcement agencies nationwide, Federal's HST provides near 100% weight retention through most barriers. Consistent expansion, optimum penetration and superior terminal performance, it’s specially designed hollow point won’t plug while passing through a variety of barriers. Now available to the public, it should be your first choice to protect those you care about.

Protect your home and family with a time-tested and popular ammunition choice among defense experts. Federal's unique center-post design delivers controlled expansion and the notched jacket provides efficient energy transfer to penetrate barriers while retaining stopping power.

Heavy for caliber ammo retains the best performance from shorter barrels. For what you're wanting I'd suggest the 147 gr Gold Dot or the 147 gr HST.

Go to SGAmmo and sign up for back in stock notifications. Make sure and jump quickly when you get the notice as the ammo sells very quickly.

ETA: We're talking about IDEAL here. I'd shoot a 147 gr or 124 gr HST or Gold Dot, standard pressure or +P. SGAmmo does have some of those, I'd also consider the Ranger Q4364 bonded 147.

I use 124gr+p Gold Dots in my 17 and 19. The 19 gets more carry time.

Edit: just saw you said for a 26. I had a 26 as well and used the same ammo.

HST 147 for me but you can't go wrong with HST 124 grn.  Gold dot 124 +p is what the NYPD has used for over 10 years and they shoot a lot of people.

I know you said "No +P", but one of the best rounds out of the 26 is the Winchester 127 gr +P+.

It clocks 1206 out of my 26 and has a great reputation for stopping power.

Picking an ammo used by an agency that for years thought that 115 gr FMJ was the best round does not leave me with "warm & fuzzies".

I cannot find HST so I purchased some more Federal Hydrashock 124 grain today.  Also saw some Hornady Critical Defense....will test the 124 grain in my 26 and 19 this weekend...if it feeds good, will use this.

Thanks for the replies...

Validation is the testing done by the FBI. The critical duty 135 +p came out on top on their ballistic testing. One of the reasons they are going back to the 9mm round.

This is why I use federal bple  115gr +p+  it has a street record of working and is cheap enough to practice with.
