Sold off my 74 and mag stash a while ago. Bought them all when they were $34/dozen mags (with 3 pouches). Why exactly did prices shoot up when everything else has essentially dropped in the AK mag world?

I'm curious why too.  I was stunned when I saw the price a little while back.  I got mine for like $8 each or something at AIM Surplus.  They're 3 to 4 times that much now.

Did they stop importing them, or something?  Surely the armies of the world are still casting off used mags?

I remember getting a 12 pack of Bulgarian Circle 10s for under $40.

Probably because the mass exodus of surplus from Bulgaria, coupled with the surplus from Poland and Germany all occurred at the same time, which lowered the prices significantly. Surplus is just that, and by definition it cannot last forever. Also, given that Russia still uses the 5.45x39mm as their military standard, they aren't surplusing magazines at the same rate as countries that went to other calibers/systems. Another reason is that there's been less time for AK-74 magazine production, with fewer countries producing them. Therefore, there is less magazines to surplus. I'm sure there's other reasons, but those are the biggest ones that come to mind.

The popularity of 5.45 has really increased over the last 10 years also

Still, if you look around you can get 5.45 mags for $25 or so, from time to time. This year I scored a number of true blacks for that price which is obviously a hell of a lot better than the $100 we used to pay for them when they are super rare.

Check the various for sale boards as well. And AIM has really nice Russian Plums for about 35.00 a pop which isn't too bad.

Seems they have been at least $20 and up since 2008-09.

I saw the true black's super cheap a while back, and didn't know if that's what they really were or not.  I still have one that I paid a lot for, somewhere around $100.  Should have picked up more.

Someone locally is selling nice used true black mags for $30 each.  If I didn't already have a bunch I would buy some.

Ribbed RPK-74 mags have come down drastically as well. Just paid $60 shipped for one which is a hell of a deal compared to what they used to be.

Those commercial Bulgarian mags work great as range mags, even if they aren't steel reinforced at the locking tab.

I remember buying them for  $4 each shipped from  hicap

Supply fluctuates, IMO demand rises at a linear if not exponential curve.  This naturally causes higher prices.  I paid the piper but I have about 15 '74 mags so I feel comfortable

Probably not a ton of surplus available these days. Russia is probably holding onto their supplies given the whole unpleasantness in ukraine and elsewhere. The bulgys price their stuff high anyway because they can.

I agree, this is the one of the most insane things I have seen lately in the mag market

I got an email from Magpul today that stated AK74 Mags are now shipping.

Waiting for the dupe police.

I suppose they look better, but they aren't any better than a Tapco at half the price.

Those don't have steel reinforced locking tabs. Plus they are really wobbly in my 104FR.

I have plenty of commie surplus mags too . . . purchased long ago, when they were dirt cheap.

I think it's cool that MAGPUL is getting into the 5.45 market

I think they have plans for steel reinforced mags

I rate them higher than tapco

they will make fine practice mags
