So I feel it's time to get  a new AK, specifically to fill the role of being my rough and tumble, no frills, compact take everywhere rifle. I have a fixed stock SGL-21 that is just too big, and is really a safe queen, and my Draco sbr is awesome, but I loathe keeping nfa stuff in the car all the time. My thought is an irons only rifle just as it was built, with few mods, but must be compact. I'm thinking AMD-65 or an inexpensive under folder... What say you? Mainly I need an excuse to buy a new rilfe!

ATI AR kits are 400 delivered at AIMsurplus. Fatboy tactical has anderson lowers for $39.

Great combo for a trunk gun, not an AK though. It's a little wierd to me that AR`s are cheaper than AK`s these days.

ETA: VZ58`s are still 399 at palmetto.  I need to pick one of those up sometime.

Underfolder. Collapsed it's a little shorter than my ar15 pistol with 10.5 barrel and SIG brace.

I did that option. $479 for the rifle and $120 for the new E German folder from WAC.

The underfolder would be 2nd, but for me it was too long lop and the swing up part kept snagging my TShirt..

The other option is M92 with SB47.

Id do the M92 with the brace.  I saw pics of some with a folding stock adapter and then the brace attached lol so it wouldn't be a SBR

Underfolder is good.

I like my M92 with a brace, being a pistol, I can carry it loaded in my vehicle with my CCW permit.

Draco with a sig brace.

Make sure you know the law about car/concealed carry especially rifle vs pistol (may influence your decision).

I'd build a kiss AR.

Better choices of defensive ammo.

OP is in Texas and i just finished 3 years at Ft Hood so Im quite familiar with TX's gun laws.  I miss them quite a bit

In TX, your vehicle is considered your own property and you can have a gun on you or in your vehicle without a CCW, fully loaded and ready to go.  It is recommended that you have some type of safe to protect your weapons from thieves, but not required.  All federal laws still apply obviously, so like no going into school grounds...etc.

If you leave your vehicle, the weapon can stay in the car as is, (loaded, unsecured..etc) but obviously CCW laws still apply outside of your vehicle.  Texas also has no issues with the stabilizing braces so you could attach one to an M92 and not worry at all.

This is in real TX.  If you have to use your weapon in some liberal shithole like Austin or downtown Houston...etc, all bets are off and who knows what a jury might convict you of.

The Zastava N-pap underfolder is a really good deal for a high quality AK made in a real East European factory.  For the money, it is an awesome deal.  I was really impressed with the quality of my Zastava 0-pap.  The underfolder was just as impressive.

Buddy just bought a PAP pistol that takes Pmags.  Centerfire Systems I believe for $419.

Damn thing was cutting bullet holes at 50 yds with irons.

He has a brace for his and it all fits neatly in a backpack.

Add a red dot sight on a RS Regulate mount and a Chinese chest rig with 3 extra mags and you're ready to party.

The whole works will fit in a tennis racket bag pretty easily.

Ask me how I know this...

Aside from being a neat toy, I don't get the pistol AK thing.  If you can have a rifle, get the full size, as it was intended.  If you need to conceal, then a true handgun makes more sense.  Your trunk surely has the room for a full size folder, at least.  So get a full size.

Some pretty incredible options available to you right now.  I think an N-PAP DF is the best.  No compromise weapon, top quality.  Folded it can disappear in a number of creative ways.  And these prices are crazy low.

As far as AK vs AR, there are great options at both, so just pick your preferred platform.  Either rifle riding around in a padded case won't see much hardship in your trunk, and is tough enough to be ready when you need it.

Nothing wrong w/ a Sabre Defense lower w/ LPK for $100.  $100 for BCG, & a $200 upper, you have a lighter weight and less expensive rifle than an AK, and probably more accurate as well.

Never understood the attraction to AMD 65's among all other AK options.

With an actual Hungarian barrel? Most accurate AKs I've ever fired. I built 3 and while they were beat up on the outside, the bores were awesome.

These look nice. Notice how century fixed the lightening cut from previous recent milled AK's.

They didn't fix them enough.  Milled M70s don't have lightening cuts on the left side of the receiver.

Yeah, if you do not already have a ton of AKs and mags-
those are a smart buy right now.
