Saw this pic, what is it?  A fixed stock AK74M?  I thought only folders were used in military.

Looks like one of the pro-russian rebels.  There are a lot of old 74s in use in Ukraine right now. (Some really nice plum porn to be had).

An AK-74M will have a folding stock.

Looks like it has a smooth low collar brake, so probably a mid-80's AK-74, or AK-74N if it has the optics rail.

Do I actually see dark plum?  That's my guess also.

Probably not Russian military. If they are, they're posing as Pro-Russian Separatists.

AK-74's from the '80's are still in use by Ukraine. Probably grabbed some from an armory.

Yep, AK74M will have a folding stock. Lots of plum and wood AK74's in pics from Ukraine conflict.

I thought I saw it too, but I couldn't tell if I actually saw it or it was my imagination.

I just called it AK74M because of the polymer furniture.  I assumed it was a "modern", but I am not as learned on the AK tech names and generations as many of you.
So was this an AK that previously had wood furniture that was switched over to polymer?

Not likely.

Polymer furniture doesnt mean it is an AK 74m.  AK 74's had polymer furniture several years before the AK 74m was introduced.  The AK 74m will have a folding stock, standard optics mount and is built with "100 series" parts as some call them.

when I purchased my Russian Arsenal, it was a fixed stock model in 5.45.  A response here showed a pic of Russian military training with a fixed stock 74 and mentioned they were used as training rifles.  So they are out in military circles.

In this case, it was probably a rebel who was trained by the Russians and told to take his training rifle with him.

Ukraine is full of a hodge-podge of Russian small arms, but most are going  to be from the pre-independence era (hence the fixed stock 74s).

You can buy the same gun from the pic (albeit chopped up) right now from RGuns.

Didn't the plum plastic furniture start sometime around '85-86?

And then the actual black sometime around '89-90?

I thought that's how the dated were, anyway.

Doubt it. Fixed 74's abound in old Soviet armories in Ukraine.

The Russian military does not use fixed stock AK-74's. The 100 series and AK-74M rifles have been around since the 90's.

If there were any units that use old soviet AK's, it's going to be guard and reserve units.

The AK-74 is still a limited issued weapon in many places including the Russian Armed forces.

AK-74m variants are going to be issued to front line troops (Russia), but the AK/AKS-74 is still found in reserve, guard, and border forces.

Want your mind blown? There are still AKM / AKMS (7.62x39) in service as well, on top of that AK-103 and AK-104 in service with Internal ministry troops and Spetz.

They probably have a bunch of older rifles floating around with different units just as we have units still using M16A2s

Or the more likely he is actually a Russian soldier who was sent with old stock that would be easier to pass off as being from the Ukraine to make him not look like the Russian invaders that they are.

Shit,....they probably still have WWII T-34's in the back of the motor pool.

This. Probably rearsenaled at some point - replaced the wood with Polymer.
