I own a few 7.62 ak's and a good stash of ammo to feed them and do not want to venture into new calibers right now so I am on the hunt for a rifle that I can feed along side my ak's when I go shooting or hunting and I know there are not a lot of options out there but Off the top of my head..

-mini 30
-ar15
-bolt action (I know ruger used to make one and CZ still does)
-SKS
-vz58

I'm really wanting a bolt gun so that is on top of my list second would be a SKS and that's probably what I will go with seeing I can pick one up locally for around $300 or less but I would like to hear what other ak shooters are using to share ammo with their 7.62 ak and how you like it before I jump in..I know I know..buy another ak

Also is there any other rifles that use ak mags besides an sks? I thought I remembered a bolt gun that did??

Mods, if this does not fit into the ak technical forum please move it but I'm really wanting to hear primarily from ak owners because they are the smartest gun owners IMHO

ETA I forgot about the sig rifle but I'm not cool enough for one of those yet!!

Nice! now I just have to decide which one..as far as price and availability the CZ is winning but I am trying to figure out how it compares to the remington/zavasta and savage.

I like the fact that both the savage and CZ have irons.

I don't want to turn this into a non ak discussion so thanks for the Ideas guys..a bolt gun it is!

The CZ has a single-set trigger, too.  I'd sure like to get one!

I have an SKS, albeit I hardly ever take it out. Thought about a second-gen Sig 556R, but not sure it's the best use of my funds. Maybe if it was part of a trade for my MAK-90 plus cash.

The Mini-30 is enticing, but the steel-cased ammo issues kill it for me.

I considerd the mini 30 but like you said the steel case issues are a deal killer and I would just assume get a sks. If I had my mind set on a semi auto and was only using it for hunting I might would consider it for the scope mounting capabilities but I believe the sks wins in most other categories..cheaper to buy, will shoot all ammo, no new mags to buy (not to mention expensive mags) accuracy I think is better then the ruger etc..

I had a 'Mini-Mauser Mk X' years ago in 7.62x39. Made by Zastava, it was beautiful. The wood, the blueing, adjustable trigger, etc. If you could find one of those in new shape it would be great. But, the new ones are still made by Zastava, so chances are high that the quality is excellent. Made in Europe to use the European cartridge is the formula here. I would want the M85 because it appears to be the same quality as the one I had during the mid 1990s.

I would rather just get another standard ak than the vepr same thing just sporterized I want a 7.62by39 bolt action to scope and play with and shot varmints I am sureI could use the vepr in this manner but I would choose not to go with that beens I am still in possesion of 4 ak's I would like another platform for this caliber as well. I do think the vepr is sexy just not my style really like the cz527 and the remy 799

SKS was my first semi centerfire, back when you could buy one for $99 and a case of ammo for $99.  Wish I'd bought 10.
AK was about 3 years later.

That's the point, man. You're talking about hunting and you listed semi-auto carbines in the OP. The VEPR is designed to make it not look like an AK for sport shooters. Maybe you should have just omitted semi-autos from the outset.

Nice pair! Now you need a chicom ak to go with the paratrooper and a rommy sks to compliment the sar

I really don't want to go 7.62x39 in all my guns but this thread is making me want to do it...if someone posts an a2 KISS style carbine in x39 my other calibers would be looking for a new home

Gotta stick with the bolt gun for now though to give my ammo a break from semi auto and hi cap mags.
