I didn't want to beat a dead hosre and do another versus thread ( 7.62x39 vs .308 ) but lately I've been looking at AKs in .308
The Saigas only run around $500 now, but I eyed a nice conversion and it cost 3x that
Having three AKs in x39 my next move was to acquire one in 5.45, but the .308 is calling me
Common sense and my wallet say don't bother, the cost of .308 ammo is too high and the lack of reasonably priced and available mags factor in

At ranges of 100yds and under will a .308 ( 16-20" barrel ) really outperform in regards to barrier penetration better than          7.62x39       ( 14-16" barrel ) ???
I"m thinking skip the .308, acquire the 5.45 and upgrade my x39s
What sayeth the Darkside ?

i had a FAL. i like to standardize. sold the FAL for a saiga 308 (going all AK for my collection), did the conversion. i really liked the saiga, but my desire to standardize eventually led me to sell that too and go all x39.

the only part of that story i regret is selling the FAL

Saiga 308s are awesome.

I have one that I converted, and it one of my favorite rifles.

only reason i dont have a saiga .308 is the lack of durable mag situation..

I have one I converted myself. I consider it a multi-purpose weapon.

I plan on using it for coyote hunting/deer hunting/javelina

223 is not sufficient for deer
7.62x39 is only good for 150-200 yds

308 was the only one that makes sense.

There is nothing on the market that is available for $499 in a semi- auto platform in 308 besides the saiga

I have a couple of .308 Veprs that I love dearly.  As a DMR-type rifle or a hunting rig, .308 AK-based rifles perform extremely well.  I really like them in this capacity.

Something like this will satisfy that .308 itch

I have a plan to own one someday. I know exactly how I'm going to do the conversion and everything. It's just not #1 on my list yet. It is moving up though.

Hell yes. And at 100 yds and over. A .308 is a full rifle cartridge. A 7.62x39 is a sub-rifle cartridge. There is no comparison for effective range, energy, penetration at any range or any other category. 7.62x39 is highly effective in it's designed role and IMO is still the ultimate assault rifle cartridge.
Before you buy anything, have you considered a MAS 49/56 in either the original 7.5x54 or converted to .308? Pretty cool French Foreign Legion rifle for around $400. Drawbacks are the 10-rd mag (no others available as far as I know), questionable quality on the .308 conversions (maybe a tight chamber that has to be kept clean) and hard-to-find ammo in 7.5 French.

The only time I had one break was because I drilled a hole in the tab to reinforce it with metal.

I have been really rough with them, and they work fine.

Other than that Csspec makes metal mags that are basically all you seem to want, and they have been out for years: http://stores.csspecs.com/StoreFront.bok

Now you have no excuse. Go buy a S308!

+1 on csspecs

His initial products are/were admittedly kinda rough and sharp around the edges but last i recall he has refined his production methods and some newer & smoother 308 mags will be/have been? released along with some of the other calibers he's been working on.

The answer to this question depends on two factors:
1. What bullets are you comparing?
2. More importantly, what barrier(s)are you trying to penetrate?

Assuming you are comparing lead core FMJ to lead core FMJ, the 7.62x51 will penetrate some barriers (generally masonry) better than 7.62x39.
Of course, beyond 100 m/y the advantage goes to the 7.62x51.
