I am strongly considering giving my TGI-74 a krylon paint job.

I know several of you have painted / duracoated / etc.. your AK's.... would you care to share some pics?

thanks in advance from all of us

Yup...  If I were to do it again, I would use more green and brown over the tan.  It's not as light colored as the pics make it look.

Nice rifles everyone!

Do any of you regret painting your rifle?

I'm just afraid I'll miss being able to change things up stock set wise if its all krylon'd.....

all painted with duplicolor high temp engine paint with ceramic. i used a heat gun to get metal to about 120 degrees and then paint just sticks to it. I wait about 48 hrs then i reassemble rifle. heres some pic, all have been shot and paint held up.

Good job! Your rifles look very nice.

PS: Is the stock set on your '74, the one sold by Brownells? If so, do you think it's as nice as the KVAR sets? It seems very similar.

I found it to be a very liberating experience actually and may also paint both my 5.45 krink and my SLR105.

The main reason I haven't yet done them in multicam or some other effective scheme is that I really have no practical need to get camo'd out. My military brain tells me to do it for the effectiveness should I ever need it, my civilian side knows that if the SHTF camo isn't going to matter realistically, and in no way do I have any serious mission requirement for it because I'm not deployed, not a contractor and don't do anything other than range time and a few carbine classes . I might do it anyway just for fun but am not in a hurry to do so.

As far as regrets, I have none. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and feel good that I got over a subconcious hump about not painting a black rifle. Its hard to explain but for me there was a sense of freedom that came with painting the Krink and

Well the Easter ham got me thinking.

Out came my black stock setup along with some Krylon, I figure a test run on a stock set might entice me to do the whole rifle.

I went with a hybrid woodland setup, I still need to add some black here and there, but as my first attempt I'm satisfied. I will keep working on patterns and layers on other items laying around the house until I find the right pattern/design. I seriously just tore tape up for this go at it to get down the principle of it.

Your thoughts on rough attempt of Krylon camo-job # 1?

Edit: Added black

Finished with Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II.

Be aware that Krylon is not very solvent-resistant.

Yeah, I noticed that when I matte blacked my lancaster. I clean with water and CLP, so I think I could get by.

I'm thinking *if* I do it, I would do an green base, then decide to pattern from there......... but I just bought a plum set

What black was that semi-gloss or flat?

That is their flat black.  It's not as flat a new park job, but it's not glossy.

Might just do the metal black with aluma-hyde and get a WASR to make camo (pretty good excuse for a new rifle right???)

I'm gonna half to disagree on Krylon not being solvent resistant. I used Krylon high temp black bbq paint on my Romy g and have had no issues at all with cleaning

Finally got the balls to get out the paint....... (thanks to Tx-Zen's painted krink) I figure if people are painting their nice SBR's I have no excuses.

Here is what is done so far.

All Krylon Fusion OD matte green.

More to come.

Painting is fun!  I"ll have more pics up later once its complete (well wont be complete until the ACE stock gets here in a couple of weeks).

Now just to find someone to trade a black k-var hand-guard set for my plum set (has heat shield)

So I'm almost done.

I need to get the selector painted in a matte black and the brake is being OD'd right now. Add the ACE folder and I'm going to call it a day on this one (kind of a sad moment )

I am either going to paint / strip the CAA back to black and get a black K-var lower HG.

Here's mine:

It was a rattle-can Krylon job I did just to see what it would look like and how it would stand up to minimal abuse.

If there are moving parts anywhere, Krylon will flake easily. Never fired it in this stage and therefore can't comment about resilience to solvents. Based on what I saw, however, I'll eventually be getting something a little more permanent done.

Still, I was pleased with the results considering I was sorta winging it just for fun.

ETA: And before anyone asks or wonders, the weapon is in a free state. Unfortunately.

It is now done with the exception of an Ace folding stock, which will be in a few weeks.

I painted a pistol with Krylon Fusion OD and It never seems to dry for me. Rubs off to this day.

Did you prep well?

I used krylon fusion on the inside of my wheel wells and trim when I lifted my jeep. Held up to this day 2 years later.

A good rub down with alcohol and some heat gun action after sprayed on does wonders.

Yeah, I did. Went on over park, too.

I've heard that it doesn't work on areas that get handled by bare skin a lot.

This does make sense.

I've seen lots of M4's painted in theater that have the paint worn off the PG and around the safety area.

The krylon bbq paint that is under the OD has held up with great results, I guess only time will tell with OD's endurance.

Interesting Link I found looking for some krylon'd guns that had seen some use.
