I'm going back and forth on what to put on my 74. If I go red dot I'm thinking about PA micro dot or TRS 25.  Any opinions on those red dots for a 74?

I think you can't go wrong with the PA. Pretty much all my friends have them and have nothing but good things to say, plus all the Internet reputation that has built up seems to be very favorable.

I would be all over this but if this were to be mounted on a side rail mount I think it would be very high.

Could be higher yes but I bet you'd get used to it. Looks like it will fit the RS Regulate mount since it uses an ACOG compatible base, which means that you can remove the picatinny base and attach directly to the RS Regulate. After looking at the PA website I have to say that's a cool little optic

It will probably sit about this high on the RS mount

I've been using a TRS-25/Midwest Industries scope mount on my SGL-31 for more than two years with no issues. I've never had luck with the PA dots, but that was years ago, the new gen micro RDs seem solid.



 

I actually have a similar setup to this on my 74 with a RS Regulate 302 and AKOG Mount with the, TA11 ACOG and it is absolutely wonderful setup but a pricey setup.

I ordered a side mount rail and the TRS25. I'll post pics when I receive them. Its just for a range plinker. It won't see any combat. Thanks for the input guys. I would have ordered a PA but they never have them in stock when I'm looking.

Will definitely hold up fine for range work. Apparently the PA dots are made by a company called "Holosun" and they have their own eerily similiar offerings with great features:

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the budget dots are made by them as well to include the Bushnell, Hi-Lux, etc.

As I stated before, they seem to be the factory where most of the budget dots are being produced from. It looks like the new Hi-Lux that MAC wrote about here is made by them too based on the power switch design and 50k battery life. Doesn't appear to have the motion activated auto-on feature however, but does include killflash and covers.



 

I received my mount and dot from Amazon today. Seems like a solid setup. I haven't sighted it in yet but will report back this weekend probably.

Well I ordered on Wednesday morning and it arrived here today...that was unexpectedly fast.

I agree that it seems like a solid unit. Comes with a tall riser and the Aimpoint style base as well. I noticed that it would NOT fit my ARMS 31 mount, the base of the HS403A optic does not have a raised area for the screws and this causes the flat base to run into part of the ARMS mount. While I prefer QD I don't have a major complaint really, I can live with the screw mount.

The dot is very bright on the highest setting and it is crisp outside. Inside there is a massive amount red glare from the brightness, no surprise there. Outside it's bright enough to quickly pick up even though the photo doesn't come out well. I'll also see how it zeros this weekend but so far it's a neat little optic.
