I was looking at some photos and came across this odd looking magazine. I have cropped the photo because it somewhat NSFW but can link to an original if needed. This photograph is from the AP photographer that recently got killed in AFG. I don't know if this is where that was taken.

It's probably a Pakistani copy of the Russian plum 7.62 waffle pattern magazine.

Any chance of link to the original picture?

So for those of us that are new, what kind of mag is that now that it has been visually identified?

That mag is not explicitly one thing or another if I remember my AK lore right, but the dominant theory is that they were part of an experimental weapon design during the Abakan weapons trials in the 80s.  This rifle this was supposed to go to never made the cut (although it might have been the AEK? lt's been a while and all the links I had saved on TAKF are dead since the server switch).  There have been crates of these found in A-stan and that is where most of the ones in the US appear to have come from.

I like those mags WAY too much! Already thinking how I can color Bulgy waffles to resemble.

Abakan rifles were 5.45, those mags are for 7.62.

Right, the trials were, except that the AEK 971 was developed in 5.45, 5.56 (972) and 7.62 (973) and submitted in all 3 calibers. The dominant theory among the AK mag gurus is that this was part of the AEK series (apparently they've shown up in pictures in Russian small arms books on the subject) which would have put them in the midst of the trials. There were also various 7.62 trials in the 80s.
