I don't think ammo is hard to find.  Spam cans of surplus is harder to find.  The dirt cheap surplus is pretty much gone, though.

I would probably go ahead grab one case now if I had none. Prices might come down later but then again they might also continue to go up. Surplus is still fairly cheap, cheaper than recently manufactured anyhow. The days of really cheap x54r are likely gone forever.

Thanks Bryan.
Came here looking for, "why the hell is 54R so damn high".
Stands to reason.

Hahahaha, and I thought I was the only one, beer fueled purchases.  My wife really got pissed with me with I included a super bad ass scope.  Had to loose the scope, but the ammo...

Dry ????   I'm loaded  up for life now but quick ammo search engine results still find it for under $100/tin before shipping.  That's only $20/tin more than what I was paying after " O " got elected the first time.  I'd say that's pretty good considering the hostile 2ndA climate and volital pricing of other calibers like .223 .308 .22LR and x39.

Some think one day it will go the way of other obsolete milsurp rounds such as 30-06, .303 and 8mm but x54r is still current.  So whatever present conflicts heat up or cool down I think we'll see it around for quite some time.  As to price?  Well, I would think with the current (perceived) strength of the US dollar it would be coming down but there is an unseen deflation of all currencies across the board so - who'who's to say.

Anyway I picked my time to buy "cheap" and stack deep so I'm set in most calibers I shoot.  Now I just need to expand my 54r shooting rifle collection to help burn through it all while I'm young enough to enjoy it.

I  sold my entire stash of 6K ,got a pretty penny for it

Totally got out of the caliber for this very reason of imports drying up due to the Ukraine crisis

Glad I have over 6000 rounds, mostly purchased for 9 and 11 cents per round (lowest price was $35 delivered for 440 rounds).  With two Mosins (M38 and M91),it'll take a long time to go through.  Now, if I ever get my DP-28 parts kit built into a functioning semi-auto...

Here is some in the cans. I think there are 4 or 5 spam cans in this auction. https://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.asp?ahid=1728&aid=103937&lid=27660494&title=FOUR-HUNDRED-FORTY-440-ROUNDS-7.62-X-54R-IN-CANS

Whelp.  There it is if ya want it.

You're only about a dime/rd from non corrosive commercial ammo so I can't imagine milsurp would be especially appealing to anyone at any higher price unless it's just amazing accuracy or you have to have sealed necks and primer or love the spam can and crate packing factor or whatever.

I got spanked the the first time Barry O got elected and learned my lesson.

Yeah I don't "need" it right now. I'm good but felt that it went from a fun round to expensive and I will shoot my ar instead.

When I first started my "beer fueled purchases", I bought only brass cased stuff like the Albanian stuff.  Was going for about $25-$30 per tin.  Yea, I thought I'd rub it in.  Sometimes alcohol is good

They've been saying for years this is coming... I got a couple crates of the bulgy a couple years ago, that stuff is great. I go through it so slow, it should last a while.

I don't see that dying down anytime soon.  If they're in the middle of hostilities, you wonder if they will simply hold on to it.  It would be like selling your ammo in the middle of a firefight.  Not the best strategy.

Gouging.

Who?  The exporter?  The freight company? The importer? Or the retailer?

This is really the solution. Bullets from Sierra, Hornady and Speer are available, and I am sure others. IMR 4895 and some large rifle primers - no problems. Lee has dies - its a no brainer.
