Just about everything you are going to run into won't have a steel core (with the exception of some old commercial Chinese and the odd surplus stuff floating around). Unless you happen to find some locally from a seller that doesn't know what it is, it will be advertised as it commands a premium.

Ok. I bought some wolf in the black boxes and stuck a magnet on the tip and I was just not really liking the idea of "testing" a round on my good steel since it definitely stuck to the magnet.

It is a bi-metallic jacket (causing the magnet to stick).
Assuming your steel is of decent quality (I'm skeptical of some stuff these days) it won't do anything other than make a noise when it hits. |

Typical 5.56 will make more of a crater than your run of the mill 7.62x39, just shoot it. By the time you have worn out a AR500 steel target you will have shot THOUSANDS of rounds into it.

I agree, no issue with commercial 7.62x39 at all. Just keep it a hundred yards away or more and it will last forever.
If you do fuck one up somehow, just flip the plate around and work on the other side. |

We shot my AR500 plates this weekend...100 and 200 yards..results:
7.62x39 no damage M193 5.56 no damage 7.62x54R no damage 7N6 5.45....the smallest of pits were seen, I mean really small....but more of an impact than M193 was. |
