Anyone got an easy method for cleaning the barrel extension/locking lug area on your AR? I normally just try to get in there with a q-tip as best I can, but was wanting to see if maybe someone had a better way. Thanks!

chamber stars

I just use q-tips until clean. The stars are cool, but to cost too much for cleaning supplies imo.

But then I have been known to make my own patches out of sheets and old T-Shirts.

I use Q-tips but its a PITA. I'm wanting to try the chamber stars but they're not cheap.

I use q-tip heads and forceps to reach around behind the lugs

Braided dental rolls, and a little plastic holder.  Midway has em.  Really slick.

Tare off some toliet paper or paper towel and stuff it into the barrel extension/locking lug area (leave it a little loose), use a dental pick to push it to one side and rotate it around.  Cheap chamber stars, haven't failed an inspection yet.

Unless you have to stand for inspection, take a bolt out of the carrier, CLP it, and spin it in the extension.  Swab with a patch.  Then do chamber and barrel.  No need to overdo it.

I always hated cleaning the bolt area of the barrel.

Had to make it spotless in order to turn into the armory.

I used qtips soaked in Kroll, along with my pinky finger. Chambers stars help a little.

Hand sanitizer works if your in a bind.

Same on all accounts. I fucking hate cleaning the chamber. I also use q tips but they snap in half, so I wipe a patch around the chamber with my pinky, and that method sucks dick. I need to find a good medium to make my own chamber stars out of.

Always used Q-tips myself. Long been thinking about checking out chamber stars, but they seem really pricey for the likely just little bit of functionality over Q-tips that they'd add. Still may finally give them a whirl soon.

The stars actually do work pretty damn good, just expensive as shit for what they are, which is basically star shaped cigarette filters lol. Need to find something to make my own out of

I just wrap a cloth around my pinky and dig in.

It's not fun, but it works.

I don't worry about making it spotless anyways. Like someone mentioned earlier, it's not like I'm turning it back in to supply

This. Liberally apply cleaner of your choice before low speed in and out single pass.  Cloth and pinky to dry it out

Foam ear plug shoved into the muzzle, and a can of brake cleaner. Spray down the barrel and fill it up, let sit for a few minutes.  Scrape with a dental pick if needed.  Pull plug, run dry patch through 2x, oiled patch 1x. Re-oil any other metal that looks chalky. Do this everytime I clean my issued weapons and have never had one kicked back because it wasn't clean enough, and I am done within 5-10min.

Do the same on my personal guns too.

As said Q-tips.  I like the long wood handled ones (cotton tipped applicators).  The little wood stick can be broken off and used as a pick also...

I use that in conjunction with a few q-tips and a few patches and a mop. I can get the chambers pretty spotless.

just put more lube in it and you are good to go

Wait, are you guys saying they manufacture cleaning supplies specific for guns? Man....next someone's gonna tell me we landed on the moon...

Joking aside, q-tips are the bees knees.

I mainly just use a chamber brush and make sure everything gets some CLP, as long as my BCG is clean I really don't worry too much about the chamber.
For those who like using Q tips, Brownell's has some gun cleaning cleaning swabs that are a much harder material than soft Q tips and really hold up to a good scrubbing, they're tapered tips, same length as standard Q tips with swabs on both ends and come in two sizes. I find them handy for cleaning just about any hard to reach place.

This is what I do. I shoot it with some non chlorinated brake cleaner, then while wet, I have at it with a toothbrush. Hit it with the brake cleaner again and let it dry. Done.
I use the same method for under/around the gas tube inside the receiver.

Chamber brush.

After a few swipes with the bore cleaner of your choice, wrap a .357 size patch onto it and spin it a few times in the chamber.

Good enough...

you cheap fuckers. chamber stars are .50 each. you spend $1000 on glass, a hundred on a butt stock, $300 more for a rail etc etc etc...and then shoot ammo that costs .30/round and cant spend fitty-cent on a chamber star once ever 1000 rounds? wow.

I use this for the locking lug area.

Developed by some Brits for use with their L85's.

Otherwise i almost never clean it out

I usually just scrub the shit out of the chamber with a chamber brush, hit it with a good blast of WD-40 and repeat once or twice. Then clean the barrel and lastly run a bore snake through it. No kaboom yet.

I also just use half & half Mobile One 10w-30 and ATF Fluid.

Why bother with this?
Link Posted: 6/28/2015 4:02:17 PM EDT
[#37]
1) Spray chamber & locking lug area w/Mil-Comm TW-25B cleaner.
2) Scrub locking lug area as best I can w/old toothbrush.
3) Scrub chamber w/9mm brass barrel brush.
4) Run boresnake w/solvent down bbl.
5) Flush locking lug area, chamber & bbl w/non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
6) Take a couple of q-tips and swipe out any remaining crud from the locking lug area.
7) Call it a day.

I use this brush with a short piece of rod. Then I put the end of the rod in my cordless drill and spin the shit out of it.

I run suppressed a lot so it gets real gross in there.  About every other month that's about 2000 to 3000 rounds I hit it with break clean. Then follow up with a little G96. Do the same thing with the trigger.

I cut the ends off of a q-tip and clamp them at 90 degrees in some locking forceps pointed in the same direction.  After a good chamber brushing, I use the q-tips to clean the extension and lugs. .
