Hey guys, I just want to thank everyone in advance and I am happy to be on this forum!

I have a question about my father's old AR15. He has a Colt from the 1990s, that has seen normal shooting conditions, and has not really been fired a lot. All of the sudden, there has been this odd smell coming from the gun every time i cycled it. I have cleaned it really well and lubricated it sufficiently. What could be causing this issue? I do know Gun Scrubber was used on it, but I use Rem Oil now every time i clean it. Any help you guys can offer would be fantastic. Thanks guys!!

Does it smell like ammonia?

If it smells like a struck match or odd like that, AFAIK I think it's the smell by heat/friction created between the charge handle and upper receiver. I notice it more so when the charge handle starts running dry of lubricant.

lube it and shoot it, and don't worry what it smells like.

It's the smell of the anodizing wearing off the charging handle/upper

This.  Might just be something in the ammo powder you are using.

Metal doesn't "smell" and if you've cleaned all,the old oil and lube out ammo is the only thing left.

Anodizoning wearing.  Look inside your upper where the charging handle goes. You will see where anodizing is wearing. Happens to ARs that get cycled a lot for malfunction clearing practice or dry firing.

Thanks for this, just built my first AR15 and have racked the charging handle a few times (to then dry fire the gun) and i smelt the same thing (struck match smell) and was very curious what the cause was.

The sweet smell of freedom. Friction and lube and finish.
