Hoppes #9 says right on the bottle not to use it on nickel finishes.

Some nickel finishes are actually nickel plated on top of copper, which is then plated on top of the base metal. Dissolve the copper and the nickel comes off with it. Whether or not the NiB stuff uses a copper substrate I don't know, but it is NOT safe for ALL nickel finishes. Quoted:
