I own a ruger ar 15 556 and so does my friend. I have recently installed a PSA free float on mine and had zero problems with getting my barrel nut off. We started on my friends gun (exact same gun) and can not get the barrel nut off. I was wondering if you guys had any tips or tricks to get a stuborn barrel nut off. We have all the correct tools for the job, we just can't budge it.

Hence with the insert in the upper receiver so the vise block will not crush it, the clam shell upper block in a vise on a sturdy bench, have yet to come across a barrel nut that will not spin off a upper, even without having to resort to a cheater bar on the barrel wrench.

Hell most of the time, I just end up tearing down and building the upper receiver on the mill, since it allows me to double check down the upper receiver line , then check the Barrel gas port to make sure it TDC/ the barrel is not canted off to one side, and then rough adjust the DCM adjustable FSB to get them close for final sight in as well.

An off topic observation, but it looks to me you had to apply heat at some point based on the scorching on the receiver block.  Perhaps the OP should try that as well.

I'm thinking more of how metal expands/contracts due to temperature.  That said, heat may actually make it more difficult since aluminum expands more than steel, but I believe the lubricity would also increase.  I'd give it a try anyway.
