Hi guys, new here and new to AR building.

I'm excited to build my first AR and had my upper delivered today. Aero freedom upper and I'm not sure whether or not this "scallop" inside the upper should be there, adjacent to the forward assist hole. In addition, it has a few bumps on the outside and one sandpaper looking scrape under the anodizing which further adds to the skepticism that this thing is in spec. Was sold as new/non blem. Thanks for any thoughts.

Outside receiver blemishes:

No, that's not normal, but it won't affect the performance of the bolt carrier group.

That is most definitely a blemished receiver.  Was it sold as such?

One of his photos.

Sorry, one drive was the only thing I had and the links are a pain. Recovering my photobucket account right now and hopefully that fixes it.

Thanks, I was just working on hosting them to my site to get them put up here.

To the OP, since it bothers you, I doubt you'll have any problems getting this corrected once you send the retailer these pictures.

Yea, inside is definitely not normal at all, especially if you can feel a divot there. I wonder if rubbing some CLP or oil will make them slight scratches disappear on the outside.
I would contact the supplier.

Yeah, there's definitely a divot. Still can't figure out how to directly display images here, however, my 2nd link is a good view of the depth cut into the inner receiver.

I would swap it. It won't affect performance but non blemished should be as such. The scuffs on the outside look like they are under the anodizing. Like it was scraped against something harder before anodizing.

Yep, send it back.

They didn't finish machining the charging handle latch ramp either.

Thanks, I put them on my watch list.

It's a blem. I'd contact and press to get a replacement.

I just got an Aero upper with the same marking inside. Not near as deep as the OPs, but visible and identical in shape/size. Non blem, new in box.

Does not effect function, so I guess I will leave it. No more Aero here.

Update:

The retailer I purchased from responded promptly and professionally and had no problem at all with an exchange. They acknowledged it was a blem that got mixed in with new receivers and immediately shipped a new upper. Very happy with their response and will shop there again if need be.

Below are the pics and while this one is much better and will see action, it still has some marks by the FA hole. Certainly not gouged like the first one though.

Aero is known to have issues with quality control. You can go to the industry forum and see all the complaints but, that being said I chose to go with an aero Texas edition upper and lower for my first build. They aren't a "bad" company just need to tighten up a bit on what gets out the door.

My Aero upper. Not the best pic, I know.

Machine work is not great.

That is not a crack  @ the six. (I just saw it and about crapped), the "operator" must have dragged his/her tooling. It'll do for a budget build. Still, no more Aero for me. My PTAC upper is cleaner.

OP, the replacement they sent you looks WAY better.
I wouldn't worry about the small mark on the inside.
Looks to me like it could have been from deburring the forward assist cut during manufacturing.
Did the replacement have better finish outside?
That first one would have bugged me a little.

That looks like it will likely run, but it will bother you so much you won't like the gun. I just picked up 3 for $99 from tacticalmachining.com that were sold as blems. They all look better than that one.
