So, a buddy bought a DPMS with a fixed carry handle.  Decided he wanted a flat top.  I swapped his fixed handle upper out for a PSA flat top I had on hand (along with a new front sight post).  Now I have a DPMS stripped carry handle upper.  Build ideas?

(I don't have a 20 inch barrel "rifle"... thought about that.  Maybe a fixed handle carbine?  Some other fun toy I've never thought of building?  Give me some ideas... )

Look in the retro pic threads Here

The options are endless. I built this rifle from a DPMS carry handle upper. It's kind of retro with some modern twists. I can't tell you if this rifle is ugly as hell or not. I built it and it shoots great so that's all that counts.

I'll have to take a look at the retro thread.  I'm going to be SBR'ing my 6920 SOCOM, so maybe another shorty upper with this?

And alpharomeofifteen: that rifle is so full of ugly that I can't help but love it.  It's like an AR carbine, a Magpul'd 20", and a M&P pistol had a three way and that's what came out.

LOL That's what happens when you throw a bunch of parts together. Lipstick on a pig I guess. I really wanted to try a fixed stock so that is my brainchild.  I'll add a parts list later. (barrel is a 16" BTW)

Dumb question, but I'm not really up on my historical variants... What exactly is that?

I think it's an "XM-177" or "Commando". (11.5" barrel) Whatever you call it- like I said I want one but I don't really want to go through the expense and paperwork of the SBR process.

I'd probably go 727 or A2 clone, I'm sure there's something cool that I can't think of right now.

Take a look around in the A2 forum

The early XM177E1 commandos had anodized aluminum stocks rather than the vinyl coating.

MY take on a A2 upper that grew into a rifle

A2 20 inch rifle or 16 inch carbine. It's your choice based on what you want to add to your "Arsenal of Freedom".
I think everyone should have some iron sight variants so they are not dependent on optics.

I'm in the same situation... have an A1 upper a friend gave me that needs to be built into something fun to shoot.

I built my A2 upper into a Dissipator to keep the rifle length sight radius in play for the rear sight drum.  Not sure if it will work accurately but I do plan to take it to a long range to test it out.

My next one will be a C7 upper with a pinned 14.5" barrel...going simple & light.

Seen some 1st AD guys come thru here this summer with this conversion to their M16A2s.  Proper buffer would be a H6.

So what exactly does the H6 do that the H3 doesn't do?

Probably nothing in semi auto.  But when you have a selector for burst and auto there is a difference in performance.  You also need to consider your barrel/gas port length and size.

The H2 is 4.6 oz
the standard rifle 5.17 oz
the H6 is 5.15 oz
9mm buffer is 5.5 oz
the H3 is 5.6 oz

as you can see if shooting a 20" rifle gas system the recoil effect/impulse will be about the same as with either rifle or carbine stock.  The H2 and H3 buffers were made for the shorter gas system and larger gas ports which is important when firing full auto.

I have an A2 carry handle upper that I want to make into a can launcher.  I guess that companys sales were so hot that they only have enough tubes for complete uppers.

It collects dust right now...............
