I have ever thing but the barrel either ordered or built already and the only thing  left to buy is the barrel. What I'm looking for is a 20" barrel preferably with a target crown in a middle of the road  contour. The gun will be used mostly for hunting and some 400yd target practice.

tim:  I highly recommend Green Mountain barrels.  My first build is a 20" 5.56 using a 1in8 twist Green Mountain barrel with a "government profile".  In spite of its low cost and chrome lining, it is a real tack driver. - CW

This target  is not a fluke, when I do my part with my pet load, the rifle routinely produces 10-round groups under an inch at 100 yards.  The Hiperfire trigger helps too.

That's a hell of a price for those kind of results.

Tim, I use the Schuster thread protectors.  They come in 1/2-28 and 5/8-24 sizes and have an outside diameter that is close to flush with barrels which are .740" at the front end.  These are parkerized, but other makers offer similar protectors in "stainless" steel. Google "ar 15 thread protector" and take a look at the images provided. - CW

It appears all the thin ones are knurled, as you expect to facilitate removal.  I put mine on with a tiny drop of blue threadlocker so they stay put.  BTW, Midway is out of the Schuster brand but has several varieties from Yankee Hill in stock:
