De-molding went well but is the worst part so far.  I just did the first pour, and  advice is to go FAST.  I mixed the two, stirred for about 10 seconds, and poured into the mold.  I looked at the cup, thought crap - I mixed too much,  and pow! It went from clear liquid to white and near solid. Yikes! Also keep in mind that the mixture gets HOT.

I poured 2 tonight.  The first is great and probably usable as is.  The problem is that a couple small pieces of the mold broke off  (safety detent hole, pivot pin detent hole) so future pieces won't be usable right out of the gate.

I had made way too much plastic the first time and cut it back on the second.  Of course I made too little and the second piece doesn't have a trigger guard.

I'm super happy though and plan on making a new mold so I can cut it better.

This is why we had the discussion, a couple pages back, about putting metal pins into the mold.

Drilling a few holes is not a big deal to me compared to screwing up a mold trying to include pins for simple things.

I will, however, order the replacement parts for the AR15mold system. I think it'll make the mag catch area MUCH easier to do.  Mine tore in a couple places so I have to clean up each casting.

I think I need to make a new mold and cut the bottom of the mag well differently.  Anyone have any advice?

To minimize flashing in the mag well itself, I've taken to cutting the mold along the side of the mag well lip and then trying to slice the center plug deeper inside the mag well, so that the seam flashing there is deep enough into the mag well to sand out easily against the flats of the sides rather than in the complex interior lip.

My small pieces (mag release cavity and 2 small parts of the mag catch area that I accidentally separated from the left side) aren't holding up well.  They are the most abused parts since they are pushed and dug out of the plastic after each cast.

I decided that I needed a new mold but didn't want to guess again at where to cut.  Last night I made the left side pattern to cast the left side mold from.  This will be a combination of Boris' design and the AR15MOLD.  It will have a separate mag well core to hopefully make demolding easier. I'm excited about getting home and pouring the rubber into this pattern.

I think it turned out okay. Mold release arrives tomorrow so I can continue this project.

Yep.  Discussed several pages back.  Read the thread to find the much less expensive refills.

Been slowly reading the pages.  I was thinking of try the mold with wax and then do an loss wax mold with aluminum.  But after thinking about it's easier with 80% lower.  The only other thing is an AR-10B lower with the lost wax casing.

The holidays have kept me from posting updates.  So far I've made a bunch of castings. Most would be usable but have at least one bubble somewhere.

I got creative yesterday and made another mold.  Now I can make fruity ghost AR-9's that take Glock mags.

That's awesome!

Might want to build up that buffer tube section a bit if you're going to use a blowback upper.  Or get one of the Hera Arms thumbhole stocks that should be out soon.

I really should have waited.  Needed to beef up the rear and make a smaller mold box. But I just wigged out and did it haha.

Did you do it as an 80%?  Or you just have to lightly drill the pin holes?

This one is also an 80%.

Man, 2 months later and no new posts?  I ran out of chemicals and just recently got another batch (my excuse for not revisiting the project).  I thought there would be at least a few comments since I was here!  What is everyone up to?

More or less the same here.  Have a number of car, house, and computing projects to finish.  Hope to resume work in the summer.
