Most folks who want to adjust their gas run an adjustable gas block.  The particular folks who do so are either running suppressors, so they turn their gas down when using a suppressor, or 3-Gun competitors, running very lightweight BCGs & buffers for a particular load they tune their gun to.  If you're handloading, or want the lightest possible recoil impulse, they're handy.  Think there's also an adjustable gas upper, but I don't know the details.

They are handy to use with a fixed front sight post where you want to adjust the gas.
