Here are the results of my experiment on adding a little wood to my black rifle. The but stock was carved from a solid block of walnut my dad cut from a stump 30-some years ago. Let me know what you think!
Once I got to carving the buttstock out I ran into a flaw in the block of walnut that turned into the hole you see on the side of the stock. I keep telling myself it adds character..... Check out the curley burl I used for the but plate and the fore end covers! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8334/8133207318_a2e7f10a9f_b.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8049/8133193025_8ef0f52f6f_h.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8194/8133215542_d02a23bdee_h.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8335/8133168261_400f36bfa2_h.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8334/8133197916_388c72e058_h.jpg |

Beautiful... Why not add some filler to that area and color it dark brown?
Amazing wood grain and craftsmanship. The shape is ....unique IMHO, and I like the natural divot/gouge.
Honesty not my style... But it looks pretty damn good! The hole in in the stock is just the icing on the cake. I personally like the hole. Great job
Same here, not for me but amazing work. The wood color/grain is beautiful, great job. I do like the rail covers more.
Out of the box cool! Don't fill that hole, wood is imperfect . And it's ok to reflect that
Knothole looks like a good place for a patchbox... just saying......
I normally hate wood furniture on an AR, but this is good work. |
Looks good.
Now you need to get a straight body 20rd mag and make a extended base plate with the same wood and use a ranger plate base to lock it in. |

Very nice!!!

Beautiful piece of functional artwork you have there Sir, Congrats and great job. Love the Knot hole, gives it 10x the character and nature beauty then if it was solid... |
I REALLY like it.
I find myself going back to my roots.....old school when it come to wood on guns. I just love the workmanship. |
The hole looks like a shark (big hole is the mouth... little eye hole above it) Looks sick!
Those rail covers are freaking ingenious- old world carftsmanship meets new world tech!
Bravo sir, the whole piece is VERY impressive. My dad is a woodworker and does stuff like that, it is like black magic to my eyes! |

It's beautiful, man, it's beautiful. But, I don't really like the color filled spikes lower with the wood....Just me. |

Nice work.
Lose the color fill on lower and IMO it will look more classy. |

Nice work! If the knot in the wood begins staring at you, you could counter-sink a challenge coin, poker chip, or something else to use as a medallion and cover it up.
Not a fan of wood on ARs. Until now. Thats amazing work, you did a damn good job on that. I'd just ignore the hole.
If you live in or move to a "BAN" state.... the stock is compliant.....
seeing this thread in the list of "Active threads" I was expecting the usual junk.
I am FLOORED, that is the first wood stuck I would plunk down money for. VERY WELL DONE. |
Great Idea, I think that will be my next project! Never even thought of it! Thanks
I can't say that is something I see everyday. Beautiful work, you are skilled. I especially like the rail covers.
That is amazing! Kind of makes me want to try making a wood stock... mine will likely be made of popcicle sticks... lol great work man!
Congratulations, you are a true craftsman. And I concur with the majority, don't fill the hole, it's real....<><....:)
MAD SKILLS! Having experience in refinishing and stains, it looks beautiful.. might want to consider writing a business plan. lol
I think that I am good at woodworking until I see truly inspired work like yours!
I want to make one... but i have no tools and no woodworking skills lol

OK, I know this is nearly a repeat, but I had a couple of suggestions to improve my build and took then. I eliminated the paint and added a but cap to one of my 20 round clips. What do you think?
