I tried searching for this but no luck. Anything wrong with slapping a 6.8 upper on a 5.56 lower other than it looking stupid or some thief stealing my rifle and putting the wrong ammo in it? I see a lot of lowers marked "Multi" and haven't ever seen one marked 6.8. Just temporary, want to order a Bison Armory upper but don't have the cash for a complete lower so would just swap it onto one of my existing 5.56 lowers for the time being.

ETA: Or if I'm just an idiot please say so. I've never looked into 6.8 until about 20 minutes ago.

Same lowers for both calibers, only 308 needs a bigger magwell.  You can have 5.56, 5.45, 6.8, 22LR, 9mm (with a block), and plenty of other calibers operating out of the same lower you already have.  Won't look any different and will run just fine.

I disapprove of owning the fake AK round, but you can't tell the upper from the other upper.

Yeah I hadn't looked much into it really, was planning on making a .308 but I just don't have the cash to built it like I like it. This will give me a somewhat larger caliber to slaughter hogs with and a good round to set the kids up on some deer, bigger than .223 anyway, so it'll have to do for now.

Don't mean to jack the thread, but what IS different on a 6.8 build? Do I need a whole different upper? Or just a different barrel/bolt combo?

Barrel, bolt, magazines.

If someone were to steal your rifle I would not be too concerned about whether or not they use the right ammo!

Stag makes 6.8 marked lowers, I ordered some from rainier arms during the rush.

Tactical Machining and Essential Arms also make 6.8 marked lowers. I chose a Spikes marked multi for my 6.8 however.

A 6.8 upper will fit on a .223 / 5.56 marked lower...no issues.  You cannot use .223 / 5.56 mags for 6.8 ammo...you have to buy new mags.  6.8 mags will fit in a lower marked .223 / 5.56.

I would feel better if the cal. marked on the lower said "Multi" like the Megas and a few others.
