it has a IR lens, what do I need to see with this light after dark, or is it pretty much useless, it's a cover that snaps in place

You will need some form of image intensifier aka night vision.  Seeing as your surefire is an incandescent with an IR filter you will probably want at least a generation 2 which is the minimum I'd recommend regardless.  Then you would also need an IR laser for aiming. It's a very deep, very expensive rabbit hole you are peering down here :)

Night vision device. Unless you have one they are pretty useless unless you just want a cover to prevent your light from being seen if you accidentally activate it.
