I appreciate the time you take to read this.

===================================================

Sling mount needed for S&W M&P 15OR .223 Carbine 16" Flat top I purchased.    Rear sling mount is already mounted on the buttstock.

Photo of ar15 on link below.  Is a flat top with no front sight base.  Has a threaded hole under the gas block (I assume to a sling mount or bipod mount).  This is my first AR15 and I am just starting to research this.   Do not want to remove handguard yet.  Want to purchase something simple (does not have to be Navy Seal approved) and functional.

==================================================

These are not threaded, but would they work?  I dont see how.

I think I bought something like this for my Romanian PSL that I attached the Wal Mart Rock River bipod to.   Looks like I would have to remove my handguard.

ATI AR-15 SLING ADAPTER W/SWL   http://www.amazon.com/ATI-AR-15-SLING-ADAPTER-SWL/dp/B002AUTCOS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1284669192&sr=1-3

Am I on the right track?   Am trying to research and learn.

updated this post with link to photo under my gas block (no threading.  looks like a push button might fit but I have no idea).  what is threaded hole for?

Ok...I think I read everything but saw no mention of single, two point, or three point sling.  We need to start there.  I'm a big fan of single and two point slings for LE work.  KZeep in mind what works for me may not work for you!

Thank you for the response.

2 point is what I am assuming you are asking.  Slings for me are for long range rifle shooting.   http://www.youtube.com/user/300yardnoscope#p/u/4/BAr25nP52QQ

Have not looked into the close quarters stuff.  Just need to have a simple attachement on the front for sling (like on an sks, mauser or romanian psl).

I think I am considered old school, but am not old.

Well...if you want functional, excellent quality, but want to keep the whole thing affordable I would suggest removing your current plastic hand guard (no tools needed) and replace it with a Magpul MOE hand guard.  The MOE hand guard will open up alot of different opportunities for you.  From there you would need two mounts, unless you're planning on mounting the sling directly to your stock.  Impact Weapons Components makes a very affordable Mount-N-Slot QD for your hand guard.  From there you can hook up almost any type of 2 point sling (Gear Sector is one of the best). If it were me...Magpul MOE hand guard, IWC mount-n-slot QD, Noveske QD endplate. and a Gear Sector 2 point sling and you're good to go!

The larger hole accepts a standard push button swivel. Thats what I'm using on the front ant it costs less than 10 bucks.

thanks for this info.  i had never heard of these but I like the price.  will lookup more photos.   and research more.   again thanks.   am new and something like this will give me small rail mounts and replace handguard.

The Magpul MOE Hand Guard for AR15 M16 rifles with carbine-length gas systems combines the light weight of a standard hand guard with modular flexibility. Slots at the two six and ten o'clock positions allow for optional mounting of Picatinny rail sections for tactical lights and other accessories. Reinforced heat-resistant polymer construction provides operational durability without the weight and expense of an aluminum rail hand guard. Front extensions and lower lip provides additional operator protection from hot front sight assembly. NOTE: The MOE Hand Guard Carbine-Length is a direct replacement for existing M4 carbine type handguards and utilizes the existing front hand guard retaining cap and delta ring. Made in USA

edited update:  I think this might solve another problem I am having with my iron sights.   If I can mount a rail on top of the mapul and it is level enough I could buy the front and rear magpul sights instead of $200 iron sights. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=27446/Product/AR_15_M16_MBUS_SIGHT_SYSTEM

For awhile I used a standard push button mount for the spot in the gas block.  The rear mount has always been a quick mount attatched to my stock,  I finally got a Troy rail system and still use the QD mount, although now I have it attatched to the rail system.

I have purchased this:

MOE Handguard, Carbine, Black   and some rails
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=53235/pid=27484/sku/MOE_Handguard__Carbine__Black

and this

MOUNT-N-SLOT™ 360 Swivel Sling Mount    (I am not the purchaser on this but the link shows it.  I think the guy has more).   http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170540603410&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT#ht_742wt_1040

and a MOUNT-N-SLOT™ Bipod

I like the quick release simple attachment under the sight block but I wanted a handguard anyway.   Will see if I can put sights on rails I bought.

While the MOE Hand Guard is usually a snug fit - it does have some movement, so I wouldn't plan on using it to mount a front sight.

Here is what my MP15 OR morphed into...

I went with MI BUIS  - like them a lot. Whatever front sight you get - make sure you get one that is the correct height. S&W's railed gas block is "Rail Mount" high - NOT "Gas Block" high.

Take care,
Bob S.

I appreciate the time on your response.  this was my first ar15.   is almost ready to photo. is simple compared to all the others but for my first... simple is good.

I learned about the 'same plain' front sight issue and found 3 different ones that I documented on my journey here:  http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=18&t=510753

As much as I love iron sights... in the end I decided to go with scope only 2x7 vortex (at bottom of link above).   will try to shoot with both eyes open
