Right now I'm running troy flip ups with an Aimpoint M2.  But when my 14.5" LW middie BCM is complete I will be running a Leupy Patrol 1.25-4.  There is a marginal advantage for the Aimpoint up close, but I can reliably make rapid hits out to 450 with the leupy that I borrowed and ran through a carbine course.

Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40mm in Larue SPR QD return to zero mount, with Magpul Gen 2 MBUS.

I also have pre-sited for this rifle a Lucid M7 microdot in ADM QD return to zero mount that can be swapped with the VX-R in seconds, if desired.

However, because the VX-R has a motion detection red dot with a battery that should last for years, I have a Leupold Alumina cap on front that I keep in the down position.  Picking up the rifle, I can use it in Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC) mode with the dot against a black background and shoot both eyes open.   Hits are within 2-3" of point of aim out to 35 yards or so, where I flip up the cap and the scope takes over.

Same rifle, QD swapped for the Lucid M7 microdot and with bipod removed.   Accomplished in seconds.

I looked through a Burris MTAC 1-4 the other day and I must say on 1x that reticle is very fast.

I might just have to give it a try.

depends on what you mean "go to" rifle.

the rifle i use at work is basically a range rifle.
it uses iron sights (magpul pro rear, FSP front) for when it has no suppressor.
with suppressor, it will use a Primary Arms 4-14x44FFP

for home defense, until i get a tavor, i use a RONI kit on an XD pistol with magpul pro buis, main optic is still a tossup.  (eotech, MSE, mepro or one of the advanced series Primary Arms sights)

yup.  specifically, one with a large sight picture (even with both eyes open), with a large reticle, and with auto-on.

I run Eotechson my SBRs, an have at work for years, but I recently started running a VXR 1.25-4 on my 14.5 work rifle.  I guess it depends on what "go to" scenario we are talking about.   My GP rifle is the 14.5 with 1x4 variable, but the 10.3 rifles have their niche.

Decisions.....

I will have a better answer with more time on the VXR.

In that case, I change my choice:  Remington 1100 12 gauge tactical shotgun with Federal 00 FliteControl buckshot.  It has Remington rifle open sights on the barrel.  I run a Lucid M7 microdot low (no riser) on the rail.

I tried to do this... no chance.  Unusable in the dark.  People who say they can I honestly don't believe.  You have no idea how hard i tried to like just using irons.  Running an EOTech at the moment on my go to.  I even put a tritium FSP in just in case the EOTech dies.  I guess my light would have to die to for it to really matter tho
