Most people tape their mags so that they don't get them mixed up with other people's mags.
Some do it to indicate a poorly functioning one, and others do it to note that there is a different load in that particular mag. Im sure there are other reasons too. |

Usually marked mine with blue tape to make sure I got mine back.

Makes sense. A few more have names/markings drawn on them in magic marker, and a couple have the "550 cord through the baseplate" trick.
All are ban-era "LE/Govt Use Only" marked sounds like a pretty normal pile of 15-ish year old surplus mags. |

I always used pink tape.
Caught hell for it but no one ever took one of my mags.

Magpul followers and new springs will coat you almost as much as a new mag. You should just shoot them the way they are and enjoy.

Back when I was a unit armorer in the moarng I used the tape to distinguish between mags for the range and mags I would issue for AT or deployment.
