Thanks for the input Wolverine...with everyone's suggestion of Wolf Gold I think I might be leaning that way.

Does it tend to run dirtier than others?  Any insight as to why it tends to be cheaper than all the others?

Also, what should/shouldn't I be looking to pay for Wolf Gold?

Right now, no more than $0.32/round shipped to Oregon.  SGAmmo and Target Sports USA have this ammo in stock at these kinds of prices.  I prefer SGAmmo, but I have had good dealings with Target Sports USA as well.

ETA: I do not believe it is any dirtier than Federal Lake City XM193.  It is loaded as a .223 loading so not quite as hot as M193, but very close.  Not sure this is why it is less expensive, but I assume that Taiwanese labor costs are probably why it is somewhat lower in cost.

Yeah, I was wondering if prices have been better than that recently, or if that's basically the bottom of the range now.

Thank you for the heads up!
I have shot thousands of rounds of Independence ammo and never had an issue.   BTW, every ammo makers has a bad lot every now and again, but don't rule it out. If you have a problem with Independence, then you have a problem with Federal, cuz that's who makes it.

Actually no, IMI makes the Independence 5.56 ammo, they have also recently put out several lots of ammo under their own brand that was popping primers even in 5.56 chambers.

Its a Federal branded item, so yup.  IMI is the production contractor.

I am also a big fan of 55gr GECO .223.... my Krieger actually preferred the 5.56 version.... but all my other barrels shoot it quite well.

I'm stacked pretty deep with IMI, always liked it's consistency and dependability.
There's a few threads about Geco which has been my go to 9mm ball. The threads were raving about the accuracy of the .223 over the 5.56 55 grain. I bought some but
have yet to try it. Always keep in mind every barrel is different. What rocks for one rifle may be a disappointment out of it's brother. If you don't have an assortment of uppers
to experiment with or your budget is limited it's always smart to try a smaller amount before you buy case loads.  With that being said..........
I did just take note of some new 56 grain....not a typo, FIFTY SIX grain MEN out of Germany that SGammo just announced they had in stock. I did a quick search of MEN 5.56
reviews and found this and more:
"Metallwerk Elisenhuette GmbH (MEN) is a German company that is part of the CBC family (Magtech/CBC/S&B). This company outfits the German Military and Police with ammunition and is considered some of the best in the world."
This was posted a couple of weeks ago by Grant who owns SGammo on another forum:
"Talked to Mr. Ken Hackathorn today about this ammo. He shot .5" group with a 1-4 S&B Short Dot and his Colt. Highly impressed with the quality and capability. Just thought I would share some real feedback from a quality shooter."
That was all it took for me. Found myself pulling the trigger on 3 cases last night and also decided to give the MEN 9mm a try as well. Should be rolling in early next week. Now
hopefully the weather will cooperate.

I recall that thread but, SGammo is run by Sam Gabbert (the SG In SGammo )the guy you're talking who said he talked to Ken Hackathorn runs a different company. You're info is still otherwise good and that very statement led me to buy some German MEN. Ammo, not actual men.

Yeah, I've been avoiding Independence since reading the test results that several people posted a couple years ago on various forums indicating that it was loaded to an unusually high pressure for 5.56. As I understand it, it's assembled by IMI using components provided by Federal.

IMI M193, on the other hand, is in spec, quality ammo from everything I've seen, although it seems a little dirty to me. Widener's used to have a great deal on a 1,200-round case, but they don't seem to be carrying it anymore.

It's basically our M855 62 grain steel penetrator ammo. SS109 is the NATO standard number. Our M855 exceeds the SS109 Spec.

I keep seeing that mentioned but have never seen any proof.  In what areas does the M855 spec exceed the SS109 NATO spec?

I have the M855 specs but haven't been able to find anything on the SS109

I thought the AE black box 5.56 I have said "Tactical" on the box.

Either way, I was inquiring about the difference between the black and blue/white boxes of same caliber, and it sounds like it's just new vs old packaging.

i saw that too, which is essentially the the same price as wolf gold and the FN SS109 linked above.

For me, Wolf Gold printed the same as IMI M193 at 100 yards with my SR-15 wearing a 1-6 optic.  Which is pretty close to Black Hills 77gr TMK.

This is the only reason that I can find to stock the WG instead of SS109
