Looks like a grenade went off, though.

Yaw length is very variable and frequently long. Penetration through any barrier is terrible. Fragmentation is not always consistent. The 75 and 77 grain OTMs are better for terminal performance. The 77 TMK better still.

Until this year, 69g FGMM was the issued duty ammunition at my department. When we were testing for a replacement, we shot some gel with it. In every instance, it fragmented small enough that we couldn't weigh any of the remaining pieces. It is very accurate though.

I have had amazing results using 24.5 grains of Varget with 69 grain SMK's seated at 2.250". It has been the most consistently accurate load across a wide range of bolt action and semi-auto rifles. Velocity averages around 2750 fps from 20" barrels, only 2550 fps from 16", 2850 fps from a 24".

Some loads just shoot well. This particular combination will group 1.25" with rack grade chrome lined 20" barrels and flirts with .5" with WOA and similar quality stainless steel match barrels. It has become my test load for new rifles and I load it in bulk.

9" with explosive expansion would seem more than enough. We are not talking about a handgun round here, 1200 foot pounds of energy and all of it dumped in the target.

A side note-

My test in bha 69tmk penetrated over 12" out of my 12.5. I have a feeling the lower velocity attributed to "less" violent fragmentation and more retained mass creating more momentum to pass deeper into the tissue. I have a feeling the 69smk would be similar.

I've considered using this load out of my 10.5" for this reason (as opposed to my various 77gr loads).

@itchy-finger

The top one was bha 69gr tmk estimated between 2600-2700. 20" shooters block of synthetic 10% gel with penetration around 16 inches. I have a theory that both this and the 69gr smk will achieve greater penetration when kept below 2750 fps. The ballistic gel results on the original post mirror my theory.
