Are you looking "bullets" or loaded ammunition?

Oooops sorry. Loaded Ammunition

62g Fusion MSR is great for an SBR,  nice low expansion threshold, reasonably accurate, relatively cost effective and found all over the place.

Medium weight soft points or heavy OTM.

Beck Ammunition 64gr Nosler bonded JSPs

One hell of a deal on a great barrier-blind bonded round -- IF your chamber is GTG with true 5.56 pressure ammo.

There isn't a specific answer.

Do you want barrier blind or not?

Generally, a load with a bullet that has a lower expansion threshold. The 53gr TXS will expand as slow as 1800fps. I believe the Fusion ammo is also very similar.

Black Hills 5.56mm 50gr TSX
Reliable expansion down to 2300 fps. That would be about 75 yards from an 8" gun, about 125 yards for a 12.5"

Good barrier performance.

What are the expansion ranges with 77g OTM?

77 grain otm bullets don't really rely on expansion. They rely on fragmentation instead, but I am not sure what velocity is needed for this to occur. I am sure that someone will be along shortly with the numbers.

Thanks. I guess I should ask the same question about 50g American eagle jhp 233.  I have this for sale locally and it might be a good option for hd.

I have a bunch of CBC 77g OTM and it would be out of a DD 10.3" so Id like to know the numbers and range on that.

Then 50g AE JHP .223 from a DD 10.3"

Thanks

The Strelok app says my hand load 77gr SMKs are still 2002 fps and 685 ft-lb at 175 yards from my 10.5". I chrono'd an avg muzzle velocity of 2366 fps.

The Strelok app says AE223 50gr tipped are 1944 fps and 420 ft-lb at 175 yards from my 10.5". I chrono'd an avg muzzle velocity of 2588 fps.

I chrono'd those two loads last year. The 50gr tipped has a much lower BC, so its ballistics falls off faster.

Some enterprising young man may want to create a chart with some of the suggested rounds, their minimum velocity for doing their thing (whether that is fragmentation, expansion, yaw, whatever), and the distances they can maintain that velocity out to from a few popular short barrel lengths.  10.5, 11.5, and 14.5?  If not, maybe some enterprising old guy like me may take a shot at it.

50 gr and lighter lead core HP are designed for varmint hunting and will not penetrate adequately for defense.
