Trying to decide on what to go with for pigs.   It needs to be reliable, heavy, hollow point would be nice, and did I mention cheap.  I don't want to spend a buck a round.  When they start running I open up on them and don't want to spend $60 a night on those things.  16 inch barrel and no suppressor if that helps.

Wolf gold but it's 55gr.
IMI razor hard to find and getting close to the $1 a round problem.
Wolf steel cased, can sometimes find heavy bullets but reliability may be an issue.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

There are a couple brands less than a dollar a round here, don't know how well they work. My pig ammo runs from $1+ to $3 a round.

Palmetto has cbc 77gr otm for .60 rd might be what you're looking for.

I have had good results with Hornady 55gr SP. Comes in 50rnd boxes as well. I would go for that or the CBC 77gr SMK load from Palmetto.

I assume you are not new to this but in case you are, in my experience  once they are on the run anything other than a shot to the CNS (head, ear hole, neck, or spine) you'll have some trouble putting them down with .223/5.56. Definitely doable but it's going to take a few rounds.

Happy hunting!

I'd try PRVI 75 BTHP. Can typically be had for $0.50 or so a round.

FMJ is illegal to harvest game in some states. TN for one and I believe others.

To OP: I would use 62 gr TSX.

pigs are not "game" in most states-especially tx

I always think of ammo being the cheapest part of the hunt compared to travel, lodging, food, guides, etc.

If you are gonna eat the pigs, would it be more cost effective to use higher cost ammo that puts them down with a solid hit rather than have to track and recovered wounded/far running pigs in heavy cover using cheaper less than ideal ammo?

Its always nice to save some cash but is this a case of being penny wise and pound foolish?

I said game, but in TN, you just can't use FMJ when doing any hunting. If you can use FMJ, it should do the trick.

55gr would be fine to use, but here is a link to AmmoSpys 223/556 search page for defense/hunting ammo, you could also filter down for specific grains and what not.  Ide recommend checking the "hide steel case ammo" box to filter out the steel case ammo.

It's not considered hunting, it's considered pest control. Or eradication if you Google it you can see videos of mini guns being used, and all kinds of other things. If you go to liveleaks there is a video of about ten pigs being blown to pieces with tannerite.

None of those are legal to take hogs in TN. Hell, it is illegal to hunt hogs in TN without a landowner's exemption.

Totally missing the point. Some states you can't use FMJ. People need to know that. Don't get lost in the weeds.

Topic: FMJ will work for a cheap pig sticker. I would prefer a bullet like TSX or other game round to make sure I get a good clean kill.

Thanks a ton guys.  Several good ideas and that ammo finding website was perfect.  I was using gun-deals for ammo but not anymore.  I have it narrowed to wolf 62 gr hp steel cased for 24c and privi 75gr hp copper cased for 40c.  I might just get both.

Remington Hog Hammer is good stuff. If you have a 300AAC upper Midway has it on sale right now for around  $21/box & $5 rebate from Remington per box up to 4 boxes.

Because it's not cheap, and it's not needed.  (Edit:  Eric beat me to it.)

Hogs are like cockroaches, plentiful and they just need to be dead.  You don't need an uber bullet to kill them.  Unless you're wanting DRT, or you're shooting something bigger than 250 pounds (which is the top 5% or less in my area), pretty much anything will do.  I've killed 20 or so with M193.  Maybe 10x that many with South African 7.62MM surplus.

This isn't complicated

Despite internet lore hogs aren't any tougher than any other animal in the woods.   Just use a good 5.56 NATO spec round.   Works fine for me.

There is a video of some guys in Texas killing hogs from a helicopter, and the 'gunner' is using an AK and an AR.  The AR is being fed plain old Silver Bear 62gr. FMJ for most of the shots. Granted, a lot of the shots are close, but in several of them the hogs are running, and one solid hit was all they needed.

This one from 2011...

I use M855 for hogs, tears through bone pretty damn good and never had an issue with stopping power.
