semi auto 410 18" barrel, loaded with 15 rounds of buckshot, lets say 45 pellets total.

semi auto 9mm 4" pistol 18 rounds, any 9mm round you want.

which would you rather have to face down an unarmored threat at 10-50 yards?

I will probably catch some heat for saying thing but I would take the 9mm with just about any load you give me .. Sig or Beretta I would prefer... I have great confidence in my abilities with those weapons. I have done some testing with the .410 and personally I am not that impressed. I don't want to offend anyone but the marketing people have done a good job at talking up the .410 and its abilities. It will do okay 25 yds and under but I will take the 9mm after that for sure. Again I am not trying to start a big argument with anyone.

9mm. I don't know if I'd have enough faith in the reliability of a semi-auto .410.

really asking about the round, not the platform.

410 out of an 18" barrel is a different animal than the fools with their judges.

Are you going to be able to hit anything past 25 yards with the .410? I doubt it......I'll take the .410 for the close in stuff, and the 9mm for everything past 25 yards.

that's basically my questions.

50 yard hits with a 9mm isn't exactly hard (1" groups maybe, minute of pie plate not so much1)

Hey ... Surprised all of us agree so far

I think alot of us underestimate the 9mm, at least in modern form (e.g. bonded rangers, HST).

MY post was borne out of the suspicion that I may also be underestimating the 410 out of an 18" barrel.

I'm wondering what the effective range is.  I'm guessing 50 yards max.

I'd take the 9mm over the .410 any day.

We were shooting .410 buck (#4 i Think) out of a 18" single shot last year.  Beyond 35 yds you were lucky to put one or two pellets on a USPSA sill. target.  We were able to get .410 slug hits out to 75 yards, but barely.  My CZ-75 outshot the shotty easily.

ETA- Might get better results with a better shotgun.  We were using the Springer 22/410  O/U survival gun.   I would not want to have to do much survival with that.  Funky paddle style trigger was not condusive to accuracy.

there's the info I wanted, thanks!!!!

I have had reliable 410 buckshot experiences at 20 yards, but never tried farther...

9mm.

At 100 yards most 9mm rounds are still packing .38 special +p energy levels from the muzzle.

a 410 has all the disadvantages of a 12ga but without the advantages.  I'll take the 9 thanks

These silly .410 revolvers have brought the .410 bore back to life...it should have simply been left to die.

Do a search for "Box-O-Truth" and their test of the various .410 loads (at that time) fired from the Taurus Judge revolver.
NOT very impressive.

Shot placement and all that.

9mm for me.

It has been decades since I shot a 410, but given your parameters there is no question in my mind: 9mm.

I expect any self defence situation that I am exposed to would be more like 10 yards and under and near there the .410 would be pretty fast and good but the OP called out 10-50 yards and the .410 gets pretty sloppy out at distance.

If I am going to carry a .410 around why can't I swap it out for a lightweight AR carbine?

Since I need to vote one of the two original choices I will say 9mm.

If I had one or more nasty dogs up close and serious about tearing me up the .410 would look pretty sweet
