I think it's from a company called SME Ordnance

Anybody have experience with this stuff? I can get some locally for $6/box. It's brass cased and boxer primed.

SME Ordnance (SMEO) was formerly known as Syarikat Malaysia Explosive.

Good stuff - shot a ton of it over the years.

Boxes probably marked:
20 BUTIR

5.56

Ball M193

Lot # MAL XX-XX (date)

Specifically designed to be shot through 14.5-inch Carbines that officers and NCOs carried (troops were issued 7.62 FALs and FN CALs).

I picked up 500 rnd off the guy. Ammo looks good for being a bit old. Anealed brass, primer sealant.

Cases are marked:  5.56  MAL  9-83

Hopefully the rifles like the stuff!

I read on ARF and heard rumors that there is zero chance of any country selling surplus 5.56 NATO again thanks to the UN.

Any truth to this or just more gun shop heresay? If this is true, can anyone point me to the directive/ruling/treaty that prevents surplus ammo from being sold again?

I've shot a bit of it out of my Stag carbine, it's good stuff. I had two cases I think out of the 200 I bought (at a flea market no less) that were kinda iffy, one was dented so I'm pulling the bullet and powder and tossing the brass, and the other one was so corroded it looked like it came over on the Titanic and never quite made it.

Buy more if you get the chance.

Gun shop heresay. There is always a ban of some sort, pending lawsuit, liberal invasion guess that one did come true. But no, there isn't anything out there that would stop surplus from coming in. Just last year they got a big shipment of Radway Green .308 in, and last time I checked, England was still a member of Nato.

ETA: I saw you said 5.56, why would they ban one round but not another? The stuff just isn't out there. I think some Lit 5.56 just made it in, but it was held up in customs for a long while.

I just searched for Lithuanian 5.56 and sure enough, I found some. The retailer wants $460/k though.

If only we could reverse Klinton's ban on surplusing DoD ammunition...

Oh yeah. No doubt. That would loosen things up a little bit. And yes, the lit made it in, no one said it was a good price though. But if its as good as the .308, it might be worth the. The .308 was about as close to match grade ammo as you could get. I guess its wrong to call the lit "surplus" though, its new production, its never been issued to anywhere(other then other Nato countries getting it to use) but its not like the SA or radway that was in a stock room for 20 years, and then surplused out.

Went to the range today. Stuff shoots pretty good. No pics but the stuff shoots much better than the Centurian I had along also.

Going to see how much the guy has left and get whatever he has.
