Is the thread protector bottoming out on an internal shoulder?  If it is, that's the issue.  My BA 9mm barrel has a gap from shoulder to end of threads, but has no problem taking a KAK flash can, silencerco octane piston, or liberty mystic piston all the way to the barrel shoulder.

seems like you need the right length thread protector.

I have a BA 8in 9mm barrel and my KAK can threads all the way to the shoulder.  Almost all barrels have a small relief cut section with no threads near the wall.  It looks like your muzzle protector may not let the threads come thru the front.  Will the protector thread on from the opposite end?  That thread protector is really short.  It should slightly extend past the threads when screwed all the way on.

I have a BA 5.5 barrel and I am using a EGW thread protector from Midway USA and it threads all the way to the shoulder going on one way, but it will not thread all the way to the shoulder when put on the opposite way.  If that makes sense.

This is normal for BA barrels. They do not relieve the threads as many barrel manufacturers also do. I found this out myself.

You take barrel to local machine shop and have fella and cut releif to back of threads using a parting cutter

Take longer to set up than the 15 -20 second to hit with cut off bit

I got the same one for my pistol.  That one has a gap for barrels that don't have the threads cut all the way to the end.
