I'm picking up parts for my first 9mm AR build.  I'd like a slick-side upper (no forward assist or shell deflector), but with the ejection port cover so I can use the original style Colt 9mm large plastic shell deflector.  I didn't think this would be a scarce part, but I'm having a difficult time finding one.  Model 1 Sales lists on on their website, but it's been out of stock for some time and they won't tell me when (or if) they'll every be in stock again.  Suggestions?

Is the upper having a shell deflector a deal breaker?

ETA:  Pricey one...

That's what I'm looking for, but like you said it's a bit expensive.

I use a Sun Devil, there is also a Quentin Defense that is very similar.  It has no forward assist or case deflector, but you can put an ejection port cover and 9mm gas deflector on it.  I really like the way it looks.  Also the Sun Devil has a wider profile at the front by the barrel nut, if you have a really narrow hand guard it may not fit.

That's the one I bought.  I hated to do it, but I wanted one that did NOT have the gas port hole also.  Most of the slicksides you will see here have the hole.

Hmm.. never seen that before, it looks identical to the SD and QD.  If I was buying now I would probably go with that one since it's about $50 cheaper.

I used this one for my build.  No dust cover, but it isn't going to get dusty at the range.

Another option is the Arizona Armory slick side upper. It might even be just a remarked Sun Devil. Price is $145, quality on mine seems excellent so far but I have not built it up yet. If interested you'll need to email Jeff Covino directly to order. He also had a used one without M4 cuts in stock as well for slightly less.

Part is # UR-9b found here:  AZArmory

Are there any issues with installing the plastic 9mm brass deflector since the sides of the receiver are flat rather than curved like a regular forged upper?

I used this one, it fit perfectly.  I couldn't get this style to line up with the holes for the rod.

I have done two builds with this DPMS slick side upper.  $89 did not seem like a bad price to me.

This has always been somewhat limited in choice with some good examples above.

My recommendation is currently the Colt, I just used this in a build - see the AR-15 22 pistol above - this is on bottom of page:

http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-amp-action-parts/receivers/upper-receivers/carry-handle-upper-receiver-223-5-56-prod4796.aspx?avs|Manufacturer_1=COLT

I have also used the DPMS slick side - Midway USA - works well for a 9MM;

This was back when I was hoping Spikes would make this billet upper, but alas they ended up sticking with the colt style and standard slick side, like the Rainier and Aero examples.

+1 on the Spikes 9mm Billet Upper.  I too wish they still made this. I was able to procure one, but its cerakoted and has a few dings.  I mounted it to a LWD G9 lower. Its currently in jail, so no feedback at this time.  Its a super tight fit.  I read somewhere that its in the plans to redesign one using the lines of the current Spikes Gen 2 billet uppers, but havent seen any developments on this.

Here are a few suggestions:

American Spirit Arms
9mm Side Charger
http://www.americanspiritarms.com/upper-receivers/asa-ar-15-9mm-side-charger-upper-receiver-with-modified-carrier-gen-ii

-i mounted this onto DDLES G9 lower. its a tight fit. the side charger hits the bolt release just slightly when racking to the rear, and the catch doesnt always keep the bolt back. I have not taken to the range yet.  I chose this because the side charger is stationary and folds in during operation.  Great company to also deal with.

Gibbz Arms
Side Charger
http://shop.gibbzarms.com/G4-Side-Charging-Upper-Receiver-G4UR.htm

-no experience with them.  Saw them listed on the Quarter Circle 10 website as compatible with their lowers

X Products

I was looking for a forged flat top with no FA or brass deflector during the craziness, and had a real hard time finding them.  I ended up with two RRA uppers, and sent them to Adco to have the gas tube hole drilled (Hooked on phonics did work for me, I was just doing something different) :-)
