One of my sons and I really enjoy pistol shooting. We have a lot of good discussions and although he lives 3 hrs. away we are able to get together to shoot pistols.

He called me a couple of months ago and said he wanted to build an AR. And he said he would like for us to work together on one. He suggested we research AR's, learn all we could, select the components, etc. Then we would get together and assemble the AR. I told him I would enjoy that very much.

So we started doing some research and we found this site. This site looks exactly like what a couple of AR-15 newbies from TX need! By the way, this newbie will be 82 in Oct.

Hi
My name is Marek and I live in Poland. I will be 47 y.o in November
I was having guns on my mind since very young age, but my country realities and real life issues kept me away from enjoying shooting except some occasional shooting.
Few years ago I made my first step and decided to jump into black powder shooting. I must say I really enjoyed it. I still do, but last September I came across local Shooting club and that was an impulse to go further and obtain a sport gun owner licence. I went trough a course, past my exams, made doctor check and waiting for sport licence. With this I am just few steps away from my gun owner licence. I know, it is way more complicated here than in US.
As for my firs rifle I was leaning toward AK series rifle as in Poland it is still popular, rather easy to buy and maintain. And of course all the cult around it had its influence as well. But two weeks ago a friend of mine invited my to a shooting range to try his pimped Mossberg MMR - and that was a turning point. I fell in love with AR15 family immediately as this was my first contact with this platform. Now I browse Internet to read reviews, guides etc regarding AR 15 rifles and I enjoy it.
As for a first weapon I am torn between Mossberg MMR, SW MP 15 Sport 2 and Savage MSR 15 Patrol. I didn't make my mind yet.
I still love AK and plan to obtain one but I definitely switched my preferences and like AR15 more. So I am still learning and I am hungry for knowledge.
It is nice to be here with you.

Hi, I'm new here. I'm 56 and live in East Tennessee. I have a SKKY 9m and a Heritage Arms 22 revolver. I also have my grandfathers 25 single shot rifle.
I just found this site when looking for information about my new AR15 pistol chambered in 5.556. I've wanted one for a very long time. I'm going to be looking in the form for information about removing the stock front sights to install the front and rear sites that I have for it. I've heard some use break cleaner to clean it but then because it gets to hard to reach areas they use WD40 to oil it. I can't wait to fire it but have to because a friend that has a outdoor range is out of state for awhile. I'm waiting for him because he is a dealer and can teach me how to properly hold, fire, and maintain it.  Thanks for allowing me to join.

New guy, late to the shooting scene. Bob from Texas, DFW area. My wife and I have 3 handguns, got our LTC last year. Bought my first AR15 (ColtLE 6920 MPS-FDE) last week for my 63rd birthday. Have not picked it up yet, plan on taking an intro class next week. Looking forward to learning as much as I can from everyone here.

Hello, new member from Kansas. I always wanted to get into shooting and hunting, but my parents didn't want any real guns in the house. Thus, I started with airsoft, moved on to airguns, and when I was old enough, I purchased my first real gun, a Daniel Defense M4V7. I convinced my parents that it was good investment for home defense, which finally won them over.

I've owned the rifle for a couple months now and try to shoot it as often as I can (currently in a completely different state for college). While away, I've been doing as much research as I can. I started off with YouTube, taking a lot of inspiration from Colion Noir, Lucas Botkin of T-Rex Arms, Garand Thumb, Travis Haley, and more.

Another fun part of joining is that I can share what I've got with you all. I'm usually too timid to approach more seasoned shooters at the gun range and talk about my setup, as I don't want to seem 'flashy' or arrogant. Some people may say that I should be prioritizing training and ammunition, which I don't disagree with, but IMO, part of the fun with owning an AR-15 is being able to customize it to your liking :)   (Don't worry, I still make sure to budget for enough range ammo)

Current Setup:

DD M4V7
Cryptic Coatings Mystic Black BCG
Radian Weapons Raptor NP3 charging handle
Diamondhead BUIS with Nightbrite
Surefire Warcomp
Magpul M-LOK MVG
Magpul B.A.D. lever
Odin Works XMR II extended mag release
Geissele SD-3G trigger
UTG Red Dot sight

I definitely will be swapping out that UTG sight for an Eotech soon. I'll also be adding a Ferro Concepts Slingster (2-point sling) and a good white light (leaning towards Surefire X300 with pressure pad) before buying the Eotech. Heavily inspired by Lucas Botkin and Garand Thumb, my philosophy for my rifle setup has been to keep it as simple as possible. Each part needs to serve a purpose; that is to overcome an issue or inefficiency.

I'm glad that I finally joined, and I hope to learn even more!

Well its says I have been a member here since 2005, must have asked some questions on the AK-47 site a little bit back then?
But anyway I was going to post a picture of my "Anderson AR-15" entry level but reading for the last few days I see they are not on the popular list so I'll just say A guy I work with needed new tires on his truck so he offered me his rifle that he bought in March 2017, over 300 rounds of 223, 2 30, 1 20, 1 10, 1 5 magazines, nice carry case all for $500 so I bought it. Just ordered a Nikon 3-9X40 P-223 scope and already had P-series mounts on the gun. I think I'll shoot it and make my own opinion before hating it also!

Hi-

New to the site and new to ARs, but a long-time collector and shooter. Got my first rifle, a Winchester Model 67 Boy's rifle, for my 7th birthday. Let's just say that was over 50 years ago. (OK, well over.)

In any case, I finally decided I had to get an AR and learn about the platform first hand. I bought an Anderson AM15 and 1,000 rds of 5.56. Then Cabela's had Anderson AM15 skeletons on sale for $150 and I had a $15 coupon that was going to expire, so... Now I have two ARs

Expect to set one up as a basic tactical/home defense gun and the other as a longer range gun, maybe in 6.5 Grendel. I always liked the ballistic potential of 6.5 bullets.

Hoping to benefit form the experience of others and make some friends here over time.

Howdy! I just put together my first AR and am experiencing an issue, namely it seems that something somewhere is badly canted. It's a PSA complete .223 Wylde upper w/ freefloat handguard and a PSA complete lower.

I say canted because while zeroing my gun in at 25 yards yesterday, I had to crank my rear Magpul MBUS almost all the way to the right to get rounds where they were supposed to go.

I've got maybe a few clicks of rightward adjustment left but it seems crazy to be that far off mechanical zero.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I did make sure the sights were properly secured to the handguard.

Once zeroed the rounds were consistently touching but windage was Waaaay right of center, almost touching the side of the sight housing.

It's probably not a big deal but it is really annoying.

Greetings from Iowa.

This past summer I bought a Sig P226 MK25 and have been having fun at the range with that.  While I was exploring the local gun range the one day I saw the rifle range and decided I need an AR.  So I've been lurking on many different sites and decided its time to take the plunge.  I'm an avid pheasant hunter and my gun experience was mainly shot guns up until now.  Can't wait to learn from everyone here.

I live about 30 min from Brownells and also have a local shop that sells Spikes tatical parts.

Hi There Members,
I've been more of a pistol/shotgun guy than rifle guy, even after inheriting a Rock River Carbine many years ago that's been asleep in our gun safe.
This year, I decided to enter CMP Rimfire competition at our local gun club, and so purchased all of the parts needed and sent them to a friend/gunsmith to assemble a lightweight AR15 22lr upper. As my Wife has more money than I have good sense, I decided to build a lightweight .223 upper as well and then a lightweight Ruger pattern 10/22 competition gun for sh1ts and giggles.
I'll post pictures of both AR15 uppers in due course as they are returned to me.
I'm pleased to be part of the AR15 community whose members can help me develop skills and techniques for getting the most fun from this all American platform.

Hello all just joined up, I'm new to the AR world and only a few years into gun ownership. Just picked up my first AR15 and love it. Looking forward to getting into this hobby. I joined a few gun clubs in the area the NRA as well as GOAL. Not many of my friends are gun enthusiasts so I'm on my own. Being from the socialistic state of Massachusetts its hard to find people with shared interest. Forum looks good with a ton of information. Looking forward to getting into it.

Newbie first post.

Grew up in NW Oklahoma, lots of hunting, fishing, ATC's, 4x4's, etc.  Went to college in the City, got into drag racing, muscle cars etc.
Got married, had kids, 1st has her Master's has a job and out of the house, 2nd is a junior in college getting her teaching degree and 3rd is a junior in high school, just got his Eagle and is thinking of becoming a gunsmith and going to Murray State to get an AAS degree in Gunsmithing.  He's still in Scouting and our Troop just started a Venturing Crew.

He's chosen for his senior year, a machining class at the Vo-Tech.  We're hoping that with that and his Eagle and a god interview, he'll get accepted into the gunsmithing program.

Last summer I traded a BBC and a Muncie M20 for a South Bend 9x42 lathe with a War Dept. plaque on it, it's a '42 or '43 model and was probably meant to be on a Deuce Mobile Machine Shop truck.  It came with a lot of tooling and parts.  I'm hoping that between him taking the class at Vo-Tech and YouTube, we'll figure out how to get it set up and running.  I know it's probably not a good Gunsmith lathe, but maybe we can get some basics in and trade up.

Wife and I both have our carry permits though our jobs don't allow us to carry, she's a teachers aid and my work takes me on a lot of military bases.

We just joined our local gun club (and the NRA) as a Christmas present to him and we'll soon start frequenting it as we get a better idea of the workings there.  Being in Scouting, I'll probably volunteer for the scouting program out there, I need to get my rangemaster qualifications.

Our gun collection currently is limited to .22, 20 ga. and 9mm.  Some of my drag racing buddies compete in the AR Silhouette out there and are telling me that my son and I need to come out and play.  They have guns we can borrow in the meantime.

... to be continued due to 2000 character count limit....

My knowledge of the AR platform is about 3 or 4 weeks old.  I know enough to get in a lot of trouble.  I had the thought, I understand the AR platform (due to Mil-Spec) is sorta like Legos for adults, so I was considering the idea of he and I building an AR from new parts (not starting with an 80% lower though).  Not a complete upper and lower, but rather the pieces.  Not looking for it to be a competition gun, just a plinker to have fun.  It'll be something we never get rid of, first gun he ever built and all, but I'm not looking to have a mint in it.  Figuring on buying some simple tools, barrel wrench, armorer's block, etc.

Granted, that's not gunsmithing but I figured it'd give him a sense of part of it, plus the satisfaction of building his own gun.

Is this a bad idea?

Good afternoon everyone!

FNG on the forum, but I'm a long time shooter.  Still pretty new to the AR platform, though.  My brother purchased a SIG R516, and absolutely loves it so I figured I'd throw in and build my own.  I wanted something along the lines of an SPR/DMR clone, so I did some research and started acquiring the parts.  I've got everything except a stock, and I'm trying to find the best deal on a fixed rifle length stock.

So far, I've got the following:

Surplus Ammo & Arms assembled lower (built by Aero Precision, I believe)
Aero Precision assembled upper
Black Hole Weaponry 18" HBAR profile barrel
SAA BCG headspaced to the BHW barrel
SAA low profile gas block & rifle length tube
Arson Machine A-Hole brake
STNGR RPTR 15" handguard
Strike Industries charging handle
Brownells A2 buffer tube, spring, & buffer

Wish me luck!

Hey all.

I'm a 24 year old resident of Wilmington, North Carolina. Part time student at UNCW and full time auto technician.

I've read a bunch of detailed, informative threads on this board in the past months while shopping for my first AR-15. With the current political climate following the recent tragedy, I figured it was time to make my decision. An assault weapons ban would be extremely unlikely in NC with our current state legislature, but we seem to be facing a strong gun control wave in the making.

Enough politics, after reading many reviews of various AR's, I finally ordered a Ruger MPR for $619 out the door. Should be here in the next week. Overall, it seemed like it has by far the best available features on an entry level rifle for a reasonable price and with a reliable warranty to back it up.

So I'm excited for my rifle to arrive, looking at ordering a PA 1-6x ACSS scope to go with it, still up in the air on standard Magpul BUIS vs canted irons, would appreciate input on that regard. Thanks for the welcoming community.

Hi everyone,
Bought my first AR-15 last week, a Windham Weaponry MPC. (Why? I love the "4 pay" thing on Sportsman's Guide, and it looked like it had some good features for the price.)

I've been shooting since I was a little girl (BB and pellet guns out in the yard - mom kept me entertained), and have been a member of a local pistol club on and off for the past 8 years or so. My other guns are a Glock 34, Sig P938, a Ruger Mark II and Mark IV Competition. (I have a Ruger 10/22 as well, but that rifle is a bastard child to me.. not in love with it.) Every single one of those guns I love, but the AR is still new to me.

I thought about building an AR years ago--bought a book, did some research, then a guy I was dating bought a Rock River Arms with a bunch of accessories. We shot it once indoors and put it away.

Like many others, with the recent happenings I thought this might be my last chance to own one.. Not for any other reason than they have always intrigued me. I also bought a CMMG 22 kit for it so I can shoot it indoors at my pistol club (they don't allow .223 ammunition.)

Occasionally I shoot USPSA practice, steel, and bowling pin events. Friends have been enticing me to try 3 Gun. Never shot a shotgun before, but I'm looking forward to trying it.

I also own a 3D printer, so I've been adding items to my collection on Thingiverse.

Thanks!
Michelle

For quite awhile been popping in from time to time.  Finally occurred to me to register, frankly, so I could actually say "Thank You" occasionally to someone when I run across a really golden nugget of information. Am a FOG and have been through service rifles M1 to M16A1 (don't count the '03 I had as a kid). Recently built my first AR; not a gamer just a working tool so to speak. The ability to tailor the sights for intended use, as well as the "ounces = pounds" thing for those of a certain vintage, is a real attractant. The longest serving battle rifle has a distinct advantage (Lego-like) to others who come with a baseline weight & girth you just have to take. While I initially disliked it in the service when they took away my M14, this one next to me is a pretty good companion.

Thanks for the site. And first thanks from this end goes to Molon for all the barrel-length specific chrono work on truckloads of various factory ammo offerings.
Cheers.

New to the forums, I was reffered by the guys at Naroh Arms... my name is Jim, i’m an auto technician, airbrush artist and basically a gadget freak. I own several guns from .380 to .45. I have just started my second AR15 .223 project, the previous one was a kit I assembled with a Novesky lower and DelTon M4 upper. . This time i’m accumulating the parts myself, so I need to figure out a bit more about compatibility.

I’ll be cruising around here and picking brains, while admiring some of the more experienced guys projects and knowledge.

Thanks for a great site!

I have been in the process of building an AR for the last 2 years. It was put on the back burner with a wedding, house purchase and being a grown up. Really happy I was patient and got every piece I wanted. It was really cool to put it all together from watching videos, I think it was a huge benefit to do the trigger and fully understand how they actually work. Quickly addicted and loved how smooth and crisp my first 100 rounds were. Already thinking up a pistol...

Hi team,

Excited to learn all about these "AR15" things. Long time lever action and bolt action hunting rifle lover. This year I started participating in my shooting club's "high power" league. Had alot of fun and now I need an AR of my own to play with.

So I'm here trying to soak it all in and build my first AR. So far, great site with alot of helpful info.

One question though. Is there a place where we should post if we want other to 'vett' (for lack of a better term) our intended build? I'm the type of guy who would like to know what issues may arise before I buy and assemble things. And as I have experienced with all things firearms, there are going to be struggles and workarounds.

Hello all!
I’m Alex and I have an addiction to all things AR-15, M1 garand, M14 and handguns.
I’m hoping to help contribute to this forum and just give honest advice and 100% truthfulness at all times.
I’ve been familiar with this weapons system since 1999 and man that makes me feel old.

I’m from New Mexico and like many on here, a veteran. I particularly have an interest in lasers, NODS, lights, and The companies POF, Colt, Trijicon, MK18 builds (which I’m currently building) and I could go on.

Anyways I’m excited to be here and learn as much as I can from this great forum.

After 35 years of borrowing other people's rifles I finally bought one of my own. I purchased an Aero Precision AC-15M earlier this summer. I've been busy buying mags (Okay/Surefeed, Pmag 2 and Lancer) and ammo. I have a Magpul MBUS rear sight and am thinking of getting a red dot sight of some sort in the near future.

I haven't fired the rifle much yet but I'm very pleased thus far. This rifle has a mid-length gas system and has a 1/7 barrel. I served in the USMC from 83-87 and qualified expert twice with the M16A1 and twice with the M16A2. Having said that, I consider myself a "noob" with this rifle as that was a long time ago and it was Uncle Sam's rifle, not my very own (yeah, I know what General Rupertus said, lol). Looking forward to learning more. Thanks for letting me join.

Hello Delgado,

My rifle has a Magpul MBUIS rear sight. When I went to zero the rifle, it was a bit to the left of center.  Like you, I was a bit concerned. One thing we should both consider is that the Magpul sights are probably not "match grade". They are polymer and as such may have certain molding abnormalities. It is my understanding that they were designed more as back up sights than primary sights. I took my rifle and examined it so closely for FSB cant that I got a headache!! I still could not detect any obvious cant. I qualified as an expert with the M16A1 in 1984 with a rifle that had the rear sight cranked all the way to the right. The USMC back then shot at torso sized targets at 500 yards. If you are happy with your shot placement than that is what really matters. Again, I'm a Eugene Stoner "noob" and I welcome the insight of more studious shooters.

Hi all, I first posted on here 2 years ago (tried to find that post so I could just add to it but was unsuccessful...sorry if this is not the right place for this!) and said that I wanted to build a rifle. As is often the story, life happened and it was not until this past November that I was able to begin buying the parts as I could afford them.  My original plan was to build what I call a "standard" size (18" barrel) AR, but soon changed my mind and decided to build a SBR.  I first bought a Spikes Tactical stripped lower then applied for my tax stamp. I made wish lists, researched, watched every video I could find, lurked on here and joined so many firearm & accessory sites that it's a wonder the atf didn't come to visit me. Every purchase felt like a small triumph and I could hardly wait until my stamp arrived. I had wanted to build the rifle completely from the ground up but talked myself out of it thinking it would be too hard. I bought a Hardened arms complete upper with 10.5" barrel, Sharps Rifle Company BCG, Tomahawk ambi charging handle, CMMG lower premium lower parts kit, Spikes Tactical buffer tube with a T2 buffer, Magpul ACS stock and Magpul MBUS sights. I also bought a different muzzle brake but can't remember what the name was, it was from Spike's also. It took a couple of hours at my dining room table, lots of cursing, an unplanned trip to town to find a replacement "I bet you can guess what" and I was done...Frank was born. Proud as any new mother I grinned for days. Now I know that to you guys this is not a huge deal, but to me...I can't even explain my pride! So, I hope you will forgive the long post and that the picture is actually attached.

Signed,
Just a fluffy Grandma

I just purchased my first AR-15.  It's a Savage MSR Recon with the .223/5.56 Wylde barrel. I added a Bushnell AR 3-9x40MM optic on it with the .223 drop zone reticle and some inexpensive Barska 45 degree angled BUIS. The only issue I've noticed so far it that I will need to change the charging handle. The stock mil spec handle is difficult to grab because of the scope. I need to put a charging handle that sticks out a little more. I'm looking at the Radian Raptor. To be honest, these AR-15's can get expensive when you start adding stuff to them. The gun was $830, but after adding the scope, BUIS, a sling, a bipod, an angled foregrip, QD sockets, a case, 150 rounds of ammo (to start) a light (because it looks cool), I am up to $1,500.00, but don't tell my wife. lol
One thing I can tell you is that this rifle is super accurate. I was shooting 3 shot groups right out of the box and covering the groups with a dime, and I am no expert shot. I'm an old man with bad eyesight.

Hi,

I'm a first time visitor to the site. I just recently went on a buying spree and bought a few AR's after years of wanting.

My first was the S&W M&P 15-22
About a month later I got a PSA lower/upper in 556 with a2 front sight and later ordered the milspec carry handle and it's what I like to think of as my 'traditional' AR
About 2 weeks after that I started to obsess over the idea of AR pistols so I got another PSA set - a pistol lower and an 8.5'' upper

I got a Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot Sigh and a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40mm Scope to play around with and currently the scope is on the 22 and the red dot is on the pistol on a riser, along with mbus sights.

I think I'm at the stage now where I'm content... maybe I'll get another rifle if money falls on my lap... but for now I'm pretty happy with the 3 I have. The 22lr is cheap enough ammo to shoot all day. The 556/223's are a joy to shoot, but ammo isn't as cheap.
