Okay, besides an Aimpoint 5000, what other optics would be legit for an RO727? I have a squared Weaver/Picatinny mount, so I only need the optic now. What, if any, standard scopes are kosher? TIA.

Aimpoint 2000.....
I think your kinda limited on options . I have read in other post that it was possible for guys to buy their own Colt scopes.
I'd tell you find anything small/compact and run with it. Guns are for shoot'n. But keep you eye out for any early Aimpoint
for cheap even if it does not work. Then you will have something for the photo ops .
This is my current project . Now searching for a Surefire 6p and mounts . Trying not to order off the Internet. The fun is in the hunt!

I have an Aimpoint 1000 on an ARMS #2 mount I will sell ONCE I get a 5000. A friend on Fb has a source in Sweden, I was just told. He got a 3000.

Oh wow that's cool !
I think our guys did not favor the 3000. Something about one of the knobs aways breaking off.
Honestly I was not even looking for early Aimpoints and I found mine two weeks ago.  So yeah ,now I'm looking for a 5000.

I will keep you up to speed then. IF mine works out, perhaps you will be able to get your own.

Aimpoint 5000
Aimpoint 3000
Aimpoint 1000
Aimpoint Mk III

I had an Aimpoint 9000 on my 727 for a while. It had a good look to it although it was a larger diameter than a correct one (30mm vs. 1"). I finally found a 3000 to replace it with.

Hahaha !
I got it with a group of parts.  I must admit it was not what I was first interested in but was the deciding factor in the group purchase.

Hey , to the OP good question. I'm always learning on this site.

Well, there's always just irons.

Or a scope:

Scopes are not ideal up there, but I've always kind of had fun shooting them that way.

I know it's not an A2, but what the heck.

I gotta believe Colt scopes were used that way.  But I don't believe I've ever seen a pic of one of that Era.  Only on 20" guns.  There was a dude who recently posted in the M4 block 1.5 thread that had a Colt scope on top of a detachable carry handle.  It was pretty sweet.

There is also the Hensoldt's (Blitz's maybe they're called? I think that's what it was)  Joescuba used one and posted a pic of a rifle he built as a tribute.  I'm not sure if I have a pic of it.  But it looks a lot like a Colt scope but longer towards the back.

Or Pat's set up...  Which I'm not sure I'd like at all....   That's just getting really high....  (early eotech's / holosights)

Ok so a little interweb research tells me Leupold put letters at the end of the scope serial number to show year of manufacture.
So starting with 1993 the serial number is followed by the letter "A".
1994 --- "B"
1995--- "C"
To
1999 -----"G"

Get the pattern ?
So I'd look for a low power/compact Leupold scope with the year of manufacture you desire to replicate.

For red dots, the 2000, 3000, and 5000 were used in Oct '93. Per former Delta operator Larry Vickers, the 3000 was a "dog". However, it was still operator preference and he noted that all 3 were used.

You can add Hensoldt to the list.  Saw and used a few different models in use.

Wonder if it was a ZF 24 STANAG on an ARMS #2 carry handle mount?

Just about all models were in use including the Beta Light.  We also used the Leupold M3A scope same as used on the m24 sniper rifle.

Hey Joe, would you be willing to post your pics of the one you built, and wasn't the pic of your 1911 with it???  I would love to see those again....

Now that my issue resolution is in hand, I can reveal what it was. Drumroll...

Aimpoint 5000 in black with rings

Yes, I know, but a person here on the forum sent me an IM about having a 5000 available, and I made him a nice offer. I got VERY lucky.

This is my clone, set up to match 727s that I saw in use by various "USASOC" units in Bosnia, 1995..

Heck, freaking yeah.  That is super great.

We need a range report.

I've done a newer poor man's version of that set up and like it.  Although the charging handle sometimes hits me in the lip.  But it might not for you with the cheek riser.  It's not that big of a deal, but still sort of annoying.

It was just a 50 yard shooting session:

I like your set up about a million times better.  Which model ACOG is that?

[#28]
That is the TA-11, which is the 3.5x35 model. It has the donut of death, so "technical accuracy" is not really its strong suit.

My issued M4A1 and 4x ACOG, I had no problems doing head shots on a man sized target at 300m.

Did it have a socom profiled barrel?  Either way I totally believe that.  Well, I should say that's really good shooting but believable.
Link Posted: 5/17/2017 6:52:59 AM EDT
[#30]
Nope, standard barrel. That was from a sand bag, under non stressful conditions.

And you were listening to shows of Walker Texas Ranger on your IPod.  I'm guessing.

I cant remember the model right now and the picture isnt on this computer, but didnt the Navy SeALs have ACOGS on some of their RO727's?

joescuba,

Did any optics have flip-up lens covers on the objective lens?
