FN was making replacement barrels for A1's, so they predate the A2 as far as involment in M16 parts.

FN got their first contract for A2s in 1988 and have supplied more M16s since then than Colt. There are examples in a sticky at the top of this forum.

Yes I saw those, but they looked rather black to me.  Thanks for the info.

Only the AH forging is black - the others are gray

An example of FN gray with the "purple" tinge seen in bright light

Ok that one does look gray/purple. Do you know when the black color came in?  I have an F marked upper that is clearly black but has a  raised keyhole mark next to the F.  Is there  use date for the different codes?
Thanks,
Ralph

There are some really "purple" and "gold" colored FNs in the 10 mil serial range (black)...  IIRC I saw my first 7mil FNs (gray) in Somalia..the army had them...we (USMC) were all using 600xxxx and 601xxxx range A2s from the first run.

Black will be due to either arsenal refinish, or late 1990s - I'll guess post 1995 production.

Well that works well for me. My barrel has a standard A2 fsb and a 2003 date so should match well.
