What would be the purpose of running a heavy first stage spring?

You can have a lower second stage weight and still have 4.5lb overall for match legality.

Forgive me if my understanding of how the AR trigger functions but isn't the second stage the hammer spring itself?

No. On a traditional two stage design, the second stage weight is controlled directly by the disconnector spring weight.

Hammer spring weight doesn't have nearly as much effect on two stage designs as it does single stage AR triggers. With most single stage triggers the trigger cams the hammer back slightly before it breaks.
