I'm wondering if it's something like a GAU-5 variant or a model 653. I guess it depends on what weighs more, a non-NFA moderator or an equal length of barrel.

Model 654 would be lighter, same as a 653 but has no forward assist. Pin and weld a birdcage FH on a 14.7" barrel. Do it like a USAF mutt and add a later N1 stock for even more weight reduction.

Of course, the coolest looking non NFA builds are either the XM177E2 or GAU 5A/A.

I like the model 607.

Probably an early 723. Much the same as the 653, but with the fiberlite stock instead of the aluminum stock. You can use the Brownells 14.7" 1/12 pencil barrel and permanently attach an A2 FH.

I concur with jrs93accord, the 723. About 5.8lb. An A2, but a retro favorite.

Would an A1 FH be too short?

No.  It would just be correct for a 723.

I would say a Colt 733 "Commando" 11.5" barrel with aluminum 5.5" Flash hider pinned.

An A1 FH would not be too short, but the 723s had A2 FHs. These were M16A2 series weapons. With a 14.7" barrel, you can use a standard A1 or A2 FH, have it pinned and welded, and have it non-NFA length. Which FH that is used is dependent on which model you are cloning and how correct you want to be.

This one is right at 5.8 pounds without a mag.
