Converted by govt to another model AR?

Destroyed?

What happened to the moderators? Turned into scrape?

Thanks.

Some never made it home from Vietnam.

Some made it back but aren't transferable (no serial# or markings).

I remember seeing some legit moderators that have an "ATF" and a serial
number crudely stamped. I assumed amnesty registered.

I'd love to have a receiver stub, but have never seen one. A guy posted in the mk18 thread, he has a XM177E2 lower. I am very envious that he has one

The ATF classified moderators as silencers sometime in the early 70s. (1973 rings a bell) so the original moderators did not have any special markings.. However, after the date, to be legal,  then yes, moderators would have to be marked and needed to be registered as "silencers".
Several years back, one of our members was building a detailed clone to represent an E2 used in Nam, period correct. He made the mistake of having a nice Colt pony and address markings and a faux sn engraved on his faux moderator. Not correct for a pre 73 (? if that was the year) build. Yeah, he kicked himself for doing it.

That is an excellent question due to no real history to associate what happened to the XM177E1/E2. I thought maybe the IMF took control of a few. But I can't find anything other than we sent them the Model 653 in 1973. So, did the U.S. demill the lowers or keep them in service? Also read something on the internet saying by 1970 the CAR-15 was history? I'm sure it's true since it came from the internet. Can anyone chime on this?

Army SF and the SEALs used them well into the 80's until they were just worn out.  They were likely destroyed and replaced with 723's and 727's as they became available.

Here is an E2 going into Iran in '79 (Delta):

This is an E1 with an A1 flash suppressor, maybe mid-80's (Army SF):

If I'm not misremembering, the problem w/ the E1 & E2 was they were throwing M193 from a short bbl, and only rifled @ 1:12" - and there were baffle strikes.  Army didn't want to pay Colt to investigate, BATFE classified the moderator as a suppressor - and so the M4 got a 14.5" bbl.  Now we're putting suppressors on the M4...  what is old is new again...

But at a faster twist . . .

The Air Force regurgitated their GAU-5s (A and A/A) into GAU-5/Ps by replacing the 11.5" barrels with 14.5" 1/12 carbine barrels.  I had an original barrel that I suspect was from a USAF weapon, as I got it shortly after the change over.
