So I had some time off work and decided to build some 607 stocks I started by downloading all the pics I could off the interwebs, and studying a My65pan version for a week or two, picked stoners brain a bit, and did a lot of trial and error. Below is the plate and lever I came up with.
I thought I would start a thread to show the progress and too elicit input as to what folks are looking for in them, like solid stocks for communist states, maybe a permanent locked open model? TSI/bolt on style etc... All of the work is being done with a manual Bridgeport, and an old Cincinnati Lathe, a band saw, sander and good old hand files. I am building and testing different lock rod tubes right now, and tweaking the lever design a bit. I will post pics of those soon. Here is the progress. This is prototype #1, it is at the anodizer right now. Side view, I think I like the thinner one best?? This is what I started with. Then it turned into this. Then had it engraved, and cut it out. |

Im in for one - and they look great.
Not sure I like the thicker or thinner one -- love them both. keep it up ! ! |

WOW!! Impressive, I'll be watching this thread also. It would be so nice for
someone to be able to produce these and bring the price back to where the average joe could afford one. |

I would like to talk about buying a stock from you, I'll send an email, to discuss the particulars.
Once again the members on this board blow me away with the skill and tenacity of their efforts, simply put - WOW! |

Hey guys, I appreciate all the interest in the stocks! Thanks for the emails, but its a little more than I'm prepared for right now. I understand the excitement, and I will open an EE add for pre sales if thats whats desired.
I would like to keep this thread for suggestions, critiques and updates of the process. So I got these back from the anodizer... believe it or not these are the same color... I took 000 steel wool to the one that looks lighter and it turned out ok. I am going to try to have them get them a little grayer out the door. What do you guys think? It didn't seem to be a transfer from the steel wool to the anodize its like it evened it out. The lowers and upper are all original finish. |

Are you doing a complete up recreation of the whole stock, or just the latch? If you're doing the whole stock, do the lowers have to be drilled & tapped?

For a bolt on you can't use a regular buffer tube because with a plate on the back of the receiver the lip of the tube doesn't extend in enough to hold the buffer retainer in place. I have found a few ways around this. I'm still playing with them. |

I have a receiver extension bottom tap for chasing. If I can get it to start, I may make some lock rings myself What I don't like about this design though is the dimple for the spanner wrench. It winds up at the 10:00 position. Besides using a strap wrench I don't know how you would get it tight enough without it? Even then you risk it loosening. Any ideas? |

@FlDiveCop71 aww shucks. @spunk, I hope so @YF856, I haven't seen you in a while, thanks for popping in! I hope all is well. @DCDavidson I blast with glass before engraving and ano? I think the there was a cross pin, I have a design and will make a prototype grommet model in the future. Thanks for the compliment! @CHIEF & Morg Thanks I am in DC right now and hope to make it down to the VA war museum to see their 607. I am surprised there isn't one at the NRA museum?? To bad Aberdeen is closed So heres whats consuming my time in the shop. If you've looked around and obsessed over these like I have you may have seen some issues with the lock pin damaging the tube sleeve in some previous repros. I made and test fired multiple designs, and burnt up ALOT! of ammo. Stoner25 suggested a square pin would transfer less force to the tube. I was initially worried because my design was using 1026 DOM tubing. I was worried it may not be hard enough and deform with recoil. Long story short there were no problems with the square pin on the 1026 during test fire, but I elected to go with the stronger 4130 chrome moly instead. 4130 chrome moly will be used from now on though. I over-shot the turn downs intentionally to make room for the square on the radius of the turn |

[#35]
That's looking great. Its awesome that you are doing some R&D to make these stocks stand up to the recoil.

Ordnance relocated training and the museum from APG, Maryland to FT Lee, Virginia, some of the collection is on display in the Quartermaster Museum. I think, the new Ordnance Museum is under construction, when it is opened I'm taking several weekend trips there with a good digital camera only a couple hours drive from Portsmouth. Most of my old 35mm pics from inside the old Ordnance Museum at APG didn't develop correctly. I attended our favorite Uncle's machinist school while at APG some years ago. http://www.qmmuseum.lee.army.mil/temp_exhibits.html The Virginia War Museum is okay...well they actually do have some pretty good displays for a small museum. A quick trip across the river for me. A few pics either my wife or I took on our visit. They have it identified as an XM177E2 . I don't think they really give a damn either. Geez, it's hard to get a pic through acrylic panels with all the glare from the lighting. |

Your picture could be used against you in a court of law! Glad you weren't in Dallas. Wish I could shoot out of my shop! You continue to astound! The Aberdeen Gun room can be accessed by appointment. I know a photographer who did some of the pictures for the big AK book. He gained access via a request through the Special Forces Museum. They did the request for him. It didn't take very long, maybe a week or two.
Just an idea. Thanks for the update. BTW are there any heat treatment concerns when using chrome moly or HSS cutters? I get so deflection on larger ChrMolly. Just asking a master a build question. Ready for a deposit? Thanks Don |

I tried to carburize the 1026 DOM tubing when I was using the round 3/16 pin, but it had little effect. The chrome moly should harden a little on a heat treat/quench, but I think its unnecessary with the addition of the square 1/4 inch pin. (Thank you Stoner25!) I know member Redbay had some on another post that his son made if you want one ASAP I will knock some out as quick as I can when I get back home in two weeks. |
