Anyone have one or have any past experience with one? They are cheap little pea shooters, kinda ugly/cool, but I got a hankering to get one, just wondering what your thoughts are.

I really want the model with the collapsing stock. I saw one at the local pawn a few months ago for $100, passed on it due to lack of funds.

Found a pic of the "carbine" version. M1600R

THIS is the one I want. Measures just over 30" collapsed, weighs about 5lbs.

No experience with them other than looking at one at a surplus store many years ago. The only actual firearm the place sold. Looks like the only interchangeable part with a real AR is the pistol grip. Might be kind of fun. Think they still make them. Opinions vary

Yeah it does look like an A1 grip. They are hyped as being "M16 type", but that is a stretch for sure.

Going to a funshow this weekend in Novi, hoping to stumble on one for a decent price. I'll keep it for my 1 yo son's first rifle when he's bigger.

Squires Bingham.....yep..... I've had one for 30+ years.  Accurate as hell.  Not a true A1 Grip.

Agreed, a friend of mine has one in parts in his shop, I'm of the opinion I wouldn't even let it live in my shop in part form, let alone take up space in the safe!

I have the fixed stock.  It's Phillipine Mahogany painted black.  The paint was stripped off in the late 80's.  I took it apart to do  a thorough cleaning and now it's in a box because I forgot how to put it back together.

I am known by my friends to have a penchant for ugly, old, weird trucks, cars etc. but also for beautiful planes and women. I LIKE ugly, weird guns like Japanese MGs, but those things are too ugly even for me!

I'm the same way Morg, and I will admit the M1600 is pretty ugly, but the fact that you can get them for way less that a used Colt A1 barrel, I figured what the hell, I'll let my curiosity get the better of me. The carbine version feels pretty good in the hands, and it is light as hell. I just can't resist, it's ugly curves are growing on me every day.

I have the metal stock variety. My kid just painted it tiger stripe camo. I got it for $25 then spent more than that for a mag lol. Decent shooter and the kid loves it.

My dad bought my brother and I one back in the late 70's.  We have put tens of thousands of rounds through it.  Still goes bang 99.99% of the time when you pull the trigger.  It is based on their sport model rifle that has been in production for about 40 years now.  The carry handle is a 3/8 inch dovetail that slides on the top of the receiver.  The magazine is a standard clip magazine that has a box built around it to look like a real 20 round AR magazine.

Even though it only cost us $99 brand new from Big 5 Sporting Goods,  it is very accurate.  I mean really accurate!  -Steve

When I was a kid a begged my dad to trade my 10/22 in on one of these exactly as pictured! It was the biggest POS firearm wise, that I've ever owned. I eventually gave up on it as a gun, and turned it into a deact, that I used to play war with my buddies. We lived a block off the beach, and one night it didn't make it back home . Went back the next day and combed every inch if the beach. It was such a POS, that I forgot about losing it after a few days. Never saw it again. Some unlucky person must have found it and took it home! Even if they were lucky enough to get it firing again(doubt it) they would have tossed it as we'll!

Yes, I very much agree - now...  But, I was 10 years old and this was going to be my "first gun."  And when I was 10 years old, this was BAD ASS!  Now its 35 years old and is special to me as my very first!  -Steve

Really? That was the main thing I could recall from handling the M1600 about 30 years ago. But I was no A1 grip expert at the time. The stock is all wood too right, not plastic.?

And I think they wanted a bit more than $99 for them too. I could not afford an SP1 back then, but wanted one bad. Did not know much about ARs. This thing caught my eye until I got a good look at it. Then I wanted an SP even more.

Yep, $99 plus tax (the original receipt is still in the box).  And remember, that was 35 years ago...  No waiting period, we walked out with it that day...  I still remember buying that like it was yesterday...  As for the grip, I never tried to put it on a "real" AR15 so I can not say for sure if it will fit.  However, I can tell you it is NOT A REAL A1 grip.  It is very thin plastic.  Nothing at all like a real AR15 grip.  The stock is 100% wood, except for the butt plate.  It is plastic .-Steve

The grip looks very similar but is just a  cheap plastic copy...at least on mine.     My stock is all wood, nice reddish Phillipine mahogany.  Later versions may be plastic.
$99 sounds about right.  I can't remember. I picked mine up new in 1979-80 maybe.

Any source for parts??  Oddly enough a friend just got one last week for dirt cheap but it needs a recoil spring and maybe a few other parts.

Try gunpartscorp.com. (AKA Numrich AKA E-Gunparts)   Search for Squires Bingham 1600.  They have parts.

There was one of these abominations at the gunshow this weekend. I thought of you enough to take the guys info down, he didn't have a card, but had a small 5x5" flyer with his contact info and some other crap on it. I can email it to you if you like, but it was either $450 or $499 I don't remember. I didn't get pics of it because I was too busy trying to explain to him that someone I loosely know from the internet might be interested and that I would like the sellers contact info to pass on to you. Somehow old people think that gives a green light to explain what a straw purchase is and how it's illegal and blah blah freaking blah!
