What is this upper and barrel i traded for?? Is it a 604 upper with early 602 barrel? The finish on receiver is something that is almost spray on texture but is tough as nails as far as it is not affected by even brake clean. I am just trying to figure what lower to use or to split them up when i refinish receiver if this is a bastard in its combination in that nothing would be correct.

Looks like a re-arsenal 604 to me.  What markings are on the barrel?  Definately not a 602 upper.  Do the HG's have the two holes and L&R stampings?  With the AF uppers most any lower would work and probably be correct especially when talking re-arsenal.  Barrel looks earlier in pic and very good condition.  Any more markings like a 12 stamping it has a no drain FSB?  Very nice find.

Looks liek a nice older barrel - note the roll pin holding the sling swivel on. Any other markings? If not, you have an early non-chromed barrel tht would be appropriate for an early build. They are getting hard to find.

Looks like a later style 604 upper with an earlier 602 barrel and FSB.

That's a very early barrel. It has a cast sight base.

That's a nice combination. Looks like a square forge upper to me, not the earliest variant, but the midrange one. Should build up to be a nice rifle. I'd use a NDS-XM16E1 lower with it.

If you want it refinished, the only way to get the stuff off will probably be media blast. Unless you can find some "Dad's easy-spray" paint stripper. That stuff might take it off.

If you need to blast, I'd let US Anodizing do it and refurb it to it's original finish. They'd have to strip and reanodize. Your finish will then be the same as the lower from NDS.

Nice early barrel!  I'd take it off and start a 602 build, get another barrel for the 604 upper.

Nice 602 barrel.  Probably worth more than what you paid for the whole upper.  Barrel will bring an easy $400 very quickly if you decide to sell it and no I don't want it as I already have one.  If it has the no drain HG's they were probably original to the barrel as we know the upper isn't.

I know it looks that way, but I'm seeing there is some shadow from the photography that's making it look like the area above the port door is a bit rounder.

'Course, I could be wrong.

Compare this photo to the upper above:

Later Round Forge

Then this one:

I vote, build 602 or sell it to someone who is building a 602.

This help any on the square vs. round? The texture of the finish makes it hard to see the radius of the corner. Almost looks square in this pic. with natural light.

Still looks round to me. The receiver on the rifle in my avatar is square forge, and there's a distinct difference between it and your receiver in the area shown.

Yes i agree it looks like a round forge. I'm going to remove the barrel tomorrow and strip the puke on the upper receiver off. We have a cold tank at shop we clean magnesium parts in so i will try this before media blast. I will post pics. of markings on receiver if any present but at any rate it is a 604 mid production is this correct? Thanks for all input.

Yes, please post photos. I've been cerious lately as to what's underneath these textured refinished uppers. Hopefully there's a nice gray finish underneath.

Just be aware that when you media blast,  you'll remove the anodizing underneath also. It'll be bare aluminum.

Could the 602 barrel have been installed on the later era 604 upper originally or possibly be arsenal built?  I'm not seeing Colt proofs but they may be covered up by the refinish.  If no proofs underneath very possibly an arsenal build from parts on hand.  You usually see them the other way early receiver with a later mfg replacement barrel.  I still like the condition of the barrel as rarely do you see one period much less one that nice.  Almost bet that barrel would bring $500 plus easy in an auction setting.  Heck the FSB would bring a premium all by itself.  Pull the HG's and see if a magnet sticks to the gas tube,  if it's the early bend style.  It's definately a keeper even if it's worn out inside which I kinda doubt.  You found the retro gold that many are looking for.  Last correct 602 upper I saw sold for over $1500 with corect BCG and CH in the last year.  Glad I didn't buy it looking back but I only had $1500 in my pocket at the time and it wasn't enough dough on that day.  Thanks for sharing pics and good luck.
