My Army career was saved by having a "dummy cord" attached to my M1911A1... Many pistols were "temporary" lost while crawling in and out of a tank with a worn out standard issued leather holster.  There was an old saying that only a "dummy" didn't use a "dummy cord."

Yep; we were required to use them when I was a tanker. We had the M7 shoulder holsters, and looped the lanyard through one of the metal rings before clipping it onto the pistol.

I was on duty about 6 years ago and my partner dropped his XD45 while dropping a duece in a Stop and Shop bathroom. It was found by a janitor cleaning the floors, I got a call over the radio and my boss at the time said "Will, check and see if your dumbshit partner has his gun!". " No Sir, he doesn't." Hey Mike, you left your fucking  gun in the bathroom idiot. We had to go right back to base and the next day no more Mike.

How about an old M&P?

The innards were in good shape.

I gave it some electrolysis.

Took care of much of the rust, but obviously left some pitting.

I rubbed it with some fine steel wool and LSA.  A friend provided the stocks and the T-Grip clone.

For all it's been through, it still shoots good.

Seven yards, six shots.  The flier is the last round when I thought to myself, "hey that's a GREAT group..." and once thought the magic was gone.

You gotta love those old K-frame Smith's.  Even beat up and abused, they will get the job done.

What's the story on this old gal?

Owner of a pawn shop I frequent asked if there was anything that could be done.  I suggested electrolysis and he offered to sell it to me for $50 as is.

The pattern of the corrosion looks like it was left in its holster in the not very dry atmosphere of Suncoast Florida for many years.

Only about $40 into the rig to do the electrolysis because I already had a car charger; so $90 for an old five-screw.

Nice job on the work.  Did you remove the inner action parts before the electrolysis?

Yes.  That's a scary thing because I looked at my collection of bits and my confidence I could get it back together evaporated.

Well here's my humble contribution. A current production 1911A1 Springfield "Mil Spec", on which I changed several parts to make it look more WWII (closer to the GI version now out of production). Few hundred bucks, good shoot.

Looks good. I need to pick one of those up at some point. Came awfully close with the last batch. I'm picking up a P1 tomorrow to go with my '41 dated P.38. Looking forward to having a beater. I'll post a picture of two when I get it.

I really need to take some better pics of this. It's such a beautiful pistol. 1945 dated, US property and US Army marked Remington Rand M1911A1. Came with three original magazines, original Kraft box (with paper, and a mag still in paper), original Sears holster, original mag pouch. Amazing set and one that I've wanted for a loooong time. Only way it would be better would be if it were a Colt, but I like the Remington. Shoots like a dream after a replaced recoil and sear spring.

Sarco has arched mainspring housings with lanyard loops for about $20.  Not USGI but pretty good quality, I;ve used them on several of my commercial guns and they work just fine.  The come without plunger and hammer spring but those are easily changed.

Hey all, I figured I'd play. These don't have the style of a 1911 or hipower
But they are still retro. The Mrk 1 is at least 30 years old and the
Mrk2 over twenty I think.

I lost my father yesterday and before he left he wanted his old Mrk 2
To go to my 7 year old son. So my sons first gun came from his papa.
The Mrk1 was the second gun I ever got, I think I was 11,
Also a gift from my dad. Two very sentamental pistols.

I had thought about getting one of those, but they have a really rough appearance. I do have a 1944 Fabrique Nationale HP that has the NAZI proofs as well as the holster with NAZI proofs.

Well, I updated my retro collection about a month ago with the purchase of my new to me K38 Combat Masterpiece.  This model was made in 1955 and was the last of the 5-screw models before becoming the Model 15.  Before the adoption of the M9, the Model 15 was the weapon of choice for USAF security forces.  When I was at Seymour Johnson AFB, we still had one left in the cop armory.  It was horribly out of time and the only people that used it was the puppy pushers to fire blanks for training the dogs.  When I came across this one for $530, I jumped at it and am glad I did for that price!  As for the holster, when I was with my first reserve unit at Eglin AFB, we had an entire stack of brand new holsters and ammo drop pouches.  Our Support Group Commander said she wanted them gone and didn't care what we did with them so I snagged up a couple.

Those have a style all their own.  :)  My father and I have always called them "Ruger Lugers."

Well, we can't all have mint '44 Nazi proofed ones.    Seriously, though, can't argue with that, but my feeling was: if I get a nice one, cool; if I get a rough one, I won't feel too bad about customizing it...

Lanyard saved my 1911 from hitting the turret floor more than once.

That's my 80% clone of my issue M1911A1 in the M7 with it attendant lanyard.  The snap on my issue holster would get unsnapped on things in the turret and I was constantly losing the gun.

Sorry about your loss, Trimdad.

Here's a horrible picture of the new P1 and my Webley.

Colt 1917. Number on the butt is in the 2Ks.  My father told me that his father, who was a government official for the South,  received one from an advisor during the Viet Nam War. When he first told me the story, I thought to myself there is no such thing as a 1917! Only 1911s! haha.

Picked this one up several years ago when I finally was able to educate myself. For some reason I thought it would be nice to have something that a relative probably carried. Plus its nice to have more guns. lol.

Not sure what the format is for posting photos from imgur, but that looks great. I've kind of been interested either a S&W or Colt 1917 but haven't actively looked.

Too much other stuff on the want list.

I like those old Smiths. I have a few, probably too many to show pics of them all, but here are a few of my favorites

.44 Hand Ejector made in 1917 and issued to Canadian forces in WWI.

1899 First Model Target made in 1901. One of perhaps less than 10-20 left in original condition.

A pair of Masterpieces; the K22 was made in 1948 and the K38 in 1950.

1954 Combat Masterpiece.

1967 Combat magnum.

I have some military stuff too;

WWII 1911-A1. Top to bottom, 1942 Colt, 1944 Remington-Rand, 1943 Ithaca.

1914 Springfield Armory 1911, somewhat worse for the wear.

WWII Spreewerk P38.
