What you guys think?

I'm debating on taking my Browning HiPower and making it more Retro.  Like get the old safety lever and heck, even some old sights.  I'm not sure about the sights because the front is dovetailed on mine.  I'm so fed up with the trigger pull on it, that I'm probably going to try and change the mainspring and possible some other things.  So while I'm at it, maybe I can make it more retro.  I'm not real fond of the stock grips, but I'm not sure what aftermarket stocks would be period correct.  1972.  The year I was born.  Are there parts out there that I could do this you think?

Anyone else have a project, picture or whatever that would further the discussion of "Retro Handguns"?  I realize there are already some pistols pics posted with their coinciding rifles, but I thought we could start a more in depth thread about them.

I think it's a great idea keeping such a thing in here rather than letting it get overwhelmed in the handgun or 1911 section.  Of course, we will have to define (once again) what "retro" means vis a vis handguns...  I think something like this (don't mind the YB rear sight) ...

Sorry to be the party pooper here, but this section is for Retro ARs. I think it has been discussed before about discussing other retro things in here, & it did not fly.

If you broaden the Retro forum to anything retro, next thing you know we'll be discussing Retro furniture. You know the gaudy looking chrome kitchen table & chairs.

Hey,

Chrome table legs and chairs were at least made in the U.S.A.

But I agree, stick to Retro AR's.  Retro handguns in general would be crazy with all the handguns out there.

I think it'd be ok, maybe if limited to one thread.  This is the go-to place for Vietnam-era info, and I'd hate to miss something relegated to the 1911 forum, etc.

Also, the shotgun threads have been a very welcome addition to this forum.  The Russian AK clone thread was nice to see as well.

I think there is enough room for these "off tangent" threads.  I get tired of nothing but 20" A1 clones, which is what most topics are about here.

Here's my '69 BHP:

Aaaaaaaah, then why do we have two huge threads about retro shotguns?  That many people that frequent here are involved in.  Didn't one of them get stickied?

+1 -  I'd like to see a little more variety in the retro forum.  One or two more stickied threads maybe.

We have the Retro shotgun thread.

Retro Pistol - .38s, .45s - etc

Retro misc.  - M-79s, Brunswick grenade launchers - etc

Hell, we have a retro shotgun thread a mile long. Why not a retro pistol thread? I'd prefer retro revolvers, but hey...

Colt 1911 WW-1 Reissue, Hogue Grips.

Can't get much more retro with 1911's, IMHO.

Alright!!!  Sounds like I'm not the only one interested in this.

So is my HiPower Retro Enough? That is the question.  It's close, but not really either.  Kind of like my 603 upper with and A2 lower I suppose.

BTW, those 1911's are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

JTB:, when do you suppose beavertails came out?  I think I asked this before somewhere, but never got an answer I don't think.

I believe they were custom made at least as far back as the 1970s for early IPSC (or whatever it was called back then) shooters, but I couldn't give you a concrete answer.

Some of you have some really nice looking retro pistols!!!!  Especially that Colt!!!

Thanks JTB.  I would love to see custom made 1911's from that period!

Ok, I'll play.
Victory revolver, aircrew issue form the early 40's through 60-70's essentially a parkerized S&W Model 10. Came in .38 Special and .38 S&W and a High Standard Military.  Used for training and a silenced version for wet ops. Used by the company from the 50's until the 80's.

I'm pretty sure I saw a pic of a huey gunner wearing a victory model in Vietnam.  I've looked through a lot of books though in my time.  It was either that or a M1917.  I wish I could see that pic again.   I also saw a pic once of an infantry guy with a revolver in a holster, opposite side and backwards.  He looked pretty tired too.  Could've been a photo op though.

I had considered sending it to Cylinder & Slide to get the action slicked up, having it garnet-blasted and re-blued, but have since decided to just find a nice set of original grips and leave the finish alone.  Still will probably disconnect the magazine safety and get the action slicked up some.

I built up a couple of 1911A1's on Essex frames. This one with a Remington Rand slide like my original.

Here's the real thing.

This will be the next retro handgun project.

I also have a nice S&W Victory Model 10 and a NIB Model 49 from about the mid 60's. Also a S&W Model 36 that my Grandfather carried as a security guard at the Anniston Army Depot around the time I was born!

Nice on all accounts 45Bravo!!

I know it's not quite a combat handgun, but nevertheless, it's kind of HiStandard-ish and quite Retro.

I'm probably really stretching it, but hey, a GI or Spec Ops somewhere could've used something like it.  Maybe.  Hehehhehehehe  For training?

To go a bit further on oldie Vietnam Era AR's.  This is the Israeli IDF F4 Phantom Seat Pan version of the AR-7.  Interesting blend of FAL grips and Mauser sights.  Folds up quite small.

Hey all. Been lurking for a few months, since I really have nothing to contribute, having no ARs myself, and no immediate prospects for one, but this is a thread I can relate to.

This is my little Colt .32, circa 1906. The finish is pretty bad, but she's still solid and still shoots.

The AR-7 broken down.  Interesting to note, they ground off the Costa Mesa info on the magwell and put it on the barrel.  The extension beyond the sight is for ATF and not original.

Thanks. I  was at a gun show, and there was an estate sale there. They had two of them. This one, and one with the shorter barrel (but still with the bushing). I actually wanted the other one but (to show you how little I knew about 1903s) I thought the grip safety was broke, because it wasn't sticking out.  So I talked them down $100 and got this one.

Can't knock RIAs.  My RIA CSP is the most reliable 1911 of the half-dozen or so I own.  I carry it often.  The only thing I've done to it is change the uncommonly yucky GI sights to Fusion white-dots.  Now, I like shooting it better, but I don't shoot better...

Agreed, I just got rid of my RIA 1911, and wish now I'd kept it. I put on a military rear notch off an A1 (little wider) and an arched mainspring housing, and It fed all my reloads well.
