Issued an original M16 with triangle hand guards, three prong flash hider, no forward assist, Stainless steel BCG. In my 3rd year I did a stint in the armory and found a rack of unissued (5) GAU-5/A’s. I immediately liked them. Qual’d and issued it to myself. Loved it. When I was reassigned back to a shift my flight chief saw it and was pissed. (Probably because he didn’t get one.) So on callouts he made me take the PRC77 or the M79 as extra. The PRC77 was replaced early on with a Motorola HT500. We had no way to carry the 40mm rounds so I carried a empty gas mask pouch and loaded up, then slung it over my shoulder. Standard issue was an H harness with two magazine pouches of (3) 20 round mags, bayonet on the belt and two M26’s if needed. Never used our helmets, just a ball cap or our berets. I still carry one as close as possible, a CAR15 with pencil barrel and 20 mags. I love going retro. A little background here. Our base armory for the SPS, circa 1970’s held: S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece .38 Special (standard issue). Dump pouches, no speed loaders. M16’s (as described above) GAU-5/A’s Remington 870 shotguns M60 GPMG’s M79’s (with HE, Smoke, and WP) M18’s (Smoke grenades) M26 grenades No M203’s, no kevlar helmets, no MRE’s yet, no woodland camo uniforms, no 30 round mags yet, least not until my last year there, 1980. |

What is considered a shorty?
605 the property line or is it too long? |

Here's my 'retro' registered SBR. Israeli ACOG I got off the EE here, Surefire flashlight grips (on the fence on these), and Surefire mount (I have since received the SF can out of NFA jail). That's a LaRue trigger, and I did add a QD rear plate for my sanity.

Drool, drool!
About got the parts for a couple of builds. I wish there was a thread on a DIY 607 stock build. Definitely going the shorty and the 605 route eventually. Edit to add: I wish all of the old pictures could be restored somehow. |

I haven't spent much time here in quite a while so I decided to go back and look at this thread from the beginning.

First time uploading a picture here. Attached File
Basically the top section sits inside the bottom courtesy of JBWeld and a little Dremel work. |

Ok, I’ll ad mine in the mix, just finished it, but still have a couple parts to swap out. Attached File
