Well, your sorta right(I thought I explained what it was.. oh well). The rifle with no forward assist is an 1974 SP1with the original upper and lower receivers, since I personally bought it new back in 78($475 fwiw). I just recently swapped the barrel and stock. Also still has the orignal A1 FH, and flat non-Delta retaining ring for the hand guard. Currently it also has an original Colt FA BCG I snag'd at a gunshow in 1980ish when I got the A1 upper. Back then it was trick to have those, since having a forward assist was pretty rare at the time. You are indeed right regarding the A1 uppered rifle. I fo-pawed and traded away the real A1 lower that I had for to a good friend, knowing I had another A2 lower lined up. He still has it on a CAR15 with the crappy 11.5"+5.5" kit. But sorry for the post. I just saw so many that weren't(A2 and M4 barrels, A3 and A2 upper, etc). Carry on. |

It's not like we're tying you over an ant-hill for posting the wrong pics; it's just that KISS and Retro are distinct from each other even if there's some overlap. All retro is KISS, but not all KISS is retro...
The final configuration matters more than the age of the parts; so a '78 SP1 with all Magpul on it is considered ruined in these parts where an XM177E2 clone from all brand new bits is given kudos. Here's the thread where KISS is appriciated without any relation to a historical configuration. With the exception of Blackhawk Down carbines (which pre-date Magpul mag-pulls), this sub-forum ends with the evacuation of Saigon. |

So if you have a Z51 you're not in the club. I have an L88, does that mean I'm in the club? I think that anyone who has a passion for these black rifles should be welcome here. But of course , I don't "own" the forums with 2800 posts like you do. So what if he got the wrong 'sub-forum'? Blame google for that one, not a guy trying to post his pride and joy. Your response was somewhat mean. Just curious, were you in Saigon when we pulled out?
"retro ain't vintage, its just retro" Its a tribute, not a clone, just a tribute to those who served before us. Hat's off, sir, that's all. And yes, carry on. |

Relax, stick around a while. The rifles posted by hipower90 were nice, just not exactly "retro". L88's are nice but I prefer my 427's as ZL1's . |

View Quote We just pride ourselves on keeping things pleasant around here. He was just trying (in a gentle way) to point out the correct place for posting such a build. (A very nice carbine BTW) Many of us here also have newer ARs, but we don't post those pics here. It takes awhile to get a feel for this site, but the rules are simple. We've had some guys post their builds in the 'Real Deal thread as well - an easy and honest mistake to make. I apologize if I seemed rude as well. You'll see an unusually relaxed attitude towards posting odd things here, and the mods give us some leeway, but we try to keep the pic threads 'pure' if you know what I mean. |

View Quote Not exact...pm me if you want to know the full story but here is the best the interwebs can provide after a quick search it's close enough to get you started ;) Colt Model 655 and 656 "Sniper" variants With the expanding conflict in South East Asia, Colt developed two rifles of the M16 pattern for evaluation as possible light sniper or designated marksman rifles. The Colt Model 655 M16A1 Special High Profile was essentially a standard A1 rifle with a heavier barrel and a scope mount that attached to the rifle's carry handle. The Colt Model 656 M16A1 Special Low Profile had a special upper receiver with no carrying handle. Instead, it had a low-profile iron sight adjustable for windage and a Weaver base for mounting a scope, a precursor to the Colt and Picatinny rails. It also had a hooded front iron sight in addition to the heavy barrel. Both rifles came standard with either a Leatherwood/Realist scope 3-9x Adjustable Ranging Telescope. Some of them were fitted with a Sionics noise and flash suppressor Neither of these rifles were ever standardized. These weapons can be seen in many ways to be predecessors of the U.S. Army's SDM-R (Squad_Designated_Marksman_Rifle) and the USMC's SAM-R (Squad_Advanced_Marksman_Rifle) weapons. |

I used the Retro forum quite a bit for information, so I thought it only fair to share it with you. Colt upper reciever, probably a 68ish vintage. It was beat to hell when I bought it, but US Anodizing cleaned it up for me FNMI 1x12" replacement barrel Nodak Lower the regular mix of USGI and modern replica small parts I wanted to replicate the A1's that were still in service in the late 80's and early 90's when I served. All that I saw or got to handle were refinished black but had some gray small parts here and there. I rescued the helmet out of a Dumpster in 1992, when my command was throwing all the 'old stuff' away. Apparently DRMO didn't want any more steel pots. Thanks again for all the posts I was able to lurk in order to know how the heck to proceed, you guys are a wealth of information. View Quote Nice pic and a nice build. I did my A1 a few years back. A couple years ago, I replaced the A2 lower with a NDS lower. The upper is a USGO M16A1 upper I bought from Ohio Ordnance Works about six years ago. They sold out in no time flat. The helmet and cover are dated back to the Vietnam era, as is some of the web gear. This is indicative of what I used and wore when I went into the Marine Corps in 1978. A lot of our web gear was leftover from the war. Around 1980, we started to get newer gear in. Even our ERDL cammies and our OD utilities were replaced with the newer woodland pattern cammies. |
