Just finished 8.5" 300 blackout pistol. This is just a range toy. What kind of budget scope? I would like to put a 4x scope on it but would like to keep it light and compact. Maybe a red dot would work better. Suggestions please and again budget , I know good glass costs but this is just a range toy and funds are tight till after Xmas.

I have a primary arms 4x on my 300bo 10in pistol. It is an excellent optic.

What about a mini ACOG? I'm going to be experimenting with a TA47 (2x) on my 8.2." The 1.5x and 2x ACOGs can be had for relatively cheap, used, in the EE. They are light, compact and act more like a red dot than a scope yet offer a little magnification. I'm going to zero the top of the triangle with 110gr supers at 100m, then see where I'm at with subs at 50m. The triangle/post reticle (also crosshairs available) should function as a bdc. Plus it's an acog so you know it's not junk.

Vortex 1-4X V-bright

I have a Weaver 1-3x on 2 rifles, but an illuminated reticle would be nice for lower light and in shadows shooting.
Have a TRS25 high rise on a 223 pistol and F3 on a 300blk pistol, but an illuminated 1-3x or 1-4x would be preferred for myself.

I have the Vortex Crossfire 1-4 without the illuminated reticle and its a great scope for the price.  I got it from sprotmans guide.

Get a PA micro.  That is what I run on my 8.5".  Love it.

I put a Redfield Counterstrike red dot on my 8'5 300 blackout build.  No need for magnification since I don't plan to use it beyond 100 yards.  I got a good deal on the Redfield and I like the laser/reddot combo, but if I didn't get the deal I got I would most likely go with a Primary Arms red dot.
