I am currently in the process of build up an ar pistol.  I have completed my lower and am ready to build the upper. Upper parts list is; seekins sp223 upper, bcm bcg, Rainer arms raptor charging handle, troy alpha rail, troy lp gas block, levang linear comp, and a barrel.  I am torn between the 7.5" barrel and 9" rail or the 11.5" barrel and 13" rail.  Both of these will leave 5/8" of the comp exposed.  The build is just for fun recreational shooting.

So I ask what are the pros/cons of each barrel?  What are your thoughts?

Thanks for any thoughts opinions and or direction.

Personally, unless you plan to SBR it, I think the coolest pistols are of the 7"-8.5" barrel variety.

Again that is just my personal preference.

HA!  that looks exactly like mine except the FDE colors.     What barrel did you put into it?   I have a Kx5 coming and will convert it to a 9 inch NSR when it arrives.

Im currently closing in on finishing up my build. I was initially looking to go with a 10.5 set up but after talking with alot of folks on here Im going with a 7.5. The consensus was that the characteristics of the 10.5 + uppers was essentially the same as a 16in rifle. Im building a pistol so I want it to feel different than my rifle.. YMMV

it will feel different.  I think you will like it.   I have a 10.5.   I got it to have it suppressed and to be equivalent in length to my 16 inch.

Split the difference with a 10.3?

You got some pretty nice parts there already.... my advice go for gold. Go 7.5!

But my main reason was because of where my range membership is at. I plan to shoot it almost excursively indoors.
Its really fun showing it off to range officers and interested people.

To me when I see guys shooting a 16" barrel in a 75 foot range.... I think that's retarded.

Also... the 7.5 demands respect... and once you have one then you realize how flipping powerful of a package in 7.5" form.
Force to be reckoned with.
First time I picked up my 7.5" I thought ... this is a joke right? NOPE its an AR PISTOL!

For me, I wanted a short barreled AR to actually be SHORT, not just in the legal definition, but in actual length, so I went with 7.5in on my first AR pistol.  I recently picked up a 12inch upper because it was on sale and I wanted to try something in between the 7.5in and a regular 16inch.  I haven't had a chance to shoot the 12in much so not sure how well I like it compared to the others.  But in setting the 7.5, 12, and 16 side by side, the 12 really doesn't look that much different than the 16.   But that's just me.  I have a feeling the 7.5 and the 12 will be the two I shoot the most over the 16 though.

7.5.  I love my adams arms piston upper in 7.5.  Very reliable.

11.5" or go home.  Check the ballistics on common ammo.  I guess if you want to run specialty rounds shorter is cool but you get a lot of bang for the buck with cheap 55 grain 5.56 out of an 11.5" barrel.

We don't own multiple ARs because its practical... we do it cus its fun.

if its just for fun then geta 7.5" and loose the  linear comp and replace it w/a  regular comp that blows that concussion back towards your face

I really am serious.  It makes shooting it 10x as fun, especially at night.  the 7.25" comp'd ar was the funnest gun ever. for sure. bumping firing that from the hip at night was an absolute riot.

Now, if I was ever concerned about maybe using it to defend myself w/ I'd get 11.5 or 12.5" w/ a rifle length FF tube and a levang linear comp or troy battle comp, KX3 or similar to blow the blast away from my ears and towards the bad guy and for the imporoved ballistsics.

I recall john noveskie being a big propornany of hte 12.5" barrel in 5.56

I'm a telling you bro, bump fire that slut from the hip at night w/ a comp.  Way better than a line of blow off a hooker's ass

Jus wear ear plugs and extra thick ear muffs

Really enjoying the 10.5". The main reason i picked the 10.5" over 7.5" is to hold a little more velocity for playing at distance but it's proven to be a pretty handy little package to carry around the farm. NO REGRETS HERE!

what length shouldn't be your question. you should be asking what caliber. i would want to sling as heavy a bullet from a pistol as i could. start thinking 7.62x39 -300blk or 6.8. with 5.56, the velocitys using a 7.5 barrel are going to be less than a 5.56 was really intended to be used at, i would want more energy potential through higher bullet weights.

10.3 OR 10.5".

less kinks to work out with the gas system (if you go with 5.56) which you may run into with a 7.5.  and smaller/more compact than an 11.5

OP I am in the same spot hope you don't mind if I chime in. I have two AR pistol lowers sequentially numbered put together with Spikes pistol buffer tubes. I want the AR pistol because I refuse to pay for SBR, hey I am cheap and its a pistol a being a pistol it can be loaded and ready in our vehicles in TN if needed.

Back on point, I see these builds for fun/range/ HD/SHTF event use. I have all the other configurations covered. So while a 7.5 and a 10.5-11.5 would be cool, I don't want to worry if I am out of 75gr TAP and have to use M193 or M855 and it not performing due to barrel length. So, which would be best for a wide range of ammo. I really like the size of the 7.5 but ammo performance points to 10.5 being the minimum for ammo terminal performance.

So choices? What to go with ?

Thanks unfortunately Troy doesn't make a 12" rail or I would.  Dont ask why but I like the Troy rail.

I built a 7.5 as a little range toy but it has become my favorite AR to shoot.  I like it so much I am waitng on my form1 now so I can go ahead and put a stock on it.
